If you can open this link it's a very good 30 minute discussion between a couple Baseball America writers on the Guardians' prospects

https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories ... deep-dive/

They love the system and note that for example 2024 high school draftee Braylon Doughty who they rank No. 12 is every bit as good as a high school draftee by the Royals who they rank No. 5 in that system.
They speculate on the possibility of Wilkinson making progress at higher levels and note that many scouts think he might be successful
They are big fans of Chourio who they project at worst as a high OBP speedy solid defensive CF who might just add power and turn into a super prospect like his brother
They don't seem as concerned about DeLauter's weird swing but are not yet convinced his health will keep him on the field.

Re: Minor Matters

The Guardians are again hosting a "depth camp" for the unofficial invitees. I found the list yesterday but can't today.
It includes the one and only player on the Columbus roster who's not a true invitee: Nick Mickoljachak, who was close to making the club a spring or two ago.
And then the predictable: Bazzana, Chourio, Genoa, Cozart, and most of the rest of the AA and some Lake County rosters. These guys will be nearby and available to get a few innings in spring training games.

Re: Minor Matters

13444
I got the roster for the depth camp and it's full of top prospects and some miscellaneous players
Catchers: Barstad, recent FA signing; Logun Clark and the prominent 2024 draft pick Jacob Cozart
IF; Kayfus [1B]; Genao Bazzana Rivas Devers
OF: Antunez Boyd Chourio Lampe

P not much interesting here
Alaska Abney
Ross Carver
Aaron Davenport 2.85 ERA for Akron; lefty
Magnus Ellerts
Allan Hernandez didn't look bad in Arizona fall league
Zach Jacobs
Tommy Mace former 2nd round pick
Nick MIkolajchak
Jake Miller
Wade Morehouse
Steven Perez
Riley Pint former 1st round pick; much time on the IL
Shawn Rapp
Davis Sharpe
Carter Spivey

Milwaukee Brewers 9, Cleveland Guardians 6 (Statcast)
STARTER

Juan Brito (DH): 0-3, 2 K - Brito’s rough start to the Spring (0-for-5) continued yesterday. This is where it’s important to remember that he’s only played two games so far and neither of them matter.

RESERVES

Joe Lampe (LF): 0-2, 1 K - Lampe, who got the most defensive innings (five) of any Guardians backup yesterday as he replaced leadoff hitter Steven Kwan, became the first Cleveland player to appear in three straight games (albeit only as a pinch runner on Monday).

Micah Pries (1B): 0-2, 1 K - Pries went hitless on Tuesday after getting a hit in each of his first two games this Spring.

Will Wilson (PR-3B): 1-2, 1 R - While Wilson didn’t score as a pinch runner for Jose Ramirez in the fifth, he did cross home plate in the ninth after reaching on his first base hit in the Guardians org.

Petey Halpin (CF): 0-2 - Halpin, the first member of the 40-man to come off the bench twice this Spring went 0-for-2 for the second straight day.

Kody Huff (C ): 0-0, 2 R, 2 BB - No hits? No problem for Huff, who scored both times after reaching on a pair of walks.

Travis Bazzana (2B): 1-1, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB - Bazzan only swung the bat once on Tuesday, but once was enough for Travis to open his major league (exhibition) base hit account with a three-run blast to right center (443 feet, 107.6 MPH off the bat at a 25-degree launch angle) that was the second-longest of the day in the majors, behind a 462-foot moonshot by Kris Bryant of the Colorado Rockies.

Justin Boyd (RF): 0-2, 1 BB, 1 K - Despite starting the Spring 0-for-3, Boyd has a walk in each of the two games he has played so far.

Angel Genao (SS): 0-2, 1 K - Genao’s Tuesday was, well, the polar opposite of his major league Spring debut on Sunday.

Cooper Ingle (PH-DH): 0-0, 1 BB,1 RBI - Ingle walked with the bases loaded in the eighth in his only action of the day.
RELIEVERS

Nick Mikolajchak: 0.2 IP, 1 H - Mikolajchak successfully completed mop-up duty for the second time this Spring, this time with the help of some heads-up defense by Carlos Santana that led to a key rundown between third and home. The real story, here, however, is that his fastball was back to nearly full speed in the low and mid 95s.

Zak Kent: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R (earned), 2 K - Kent, the only prospect to hurl multiple frames yesterday, followed up a stellar fifth with a rough sixth that saw him allow one tally. Of note: Zak reprised his Opening Day velo in the fifth, but saw it drop into the 92 in the sixth. Not surprisingly, he made greater use of his slowest pitch (curveball) in the latter frame compared to a four-seamer/slider heavy fifth.

Mason Hickman: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R (earned), 1 HR allowed - Hickman started the seventh strong before giving up a homer and needing a big play from Bazzana to get out of the frame. As in the preseason opener, his four-seamer was in the 92s, so that looks like it might be a real improvement rather than a fluke.

Trenton Denholm: 1 IP, perfect, 2 K - Denholm dazzled in his first full big league exhibition frame, striking out two of the three batters he faced (both of them swinging at 91 mPH fastballs). I say “full frame” as he gave up a hit and induced a pop out, both on the first pitch, last March 2 in mop-up duty after a disastrous ninth inning by Juan Zapata.

Carter Spivey: 1 IP, perfect, 2 K - Spivey finally pitched after being one of only two Guardians to dress for the first three Spring contests (and the only to dress for each of the first four after Jorge Burgos got yesterday off). He set down a trio of Brewer minor leaguers in order. His major league Spring debut saw his four-seamer and sinker average around 92 MPH, with a sinker topping his velo chart at 93.8.

Scoreboard
Chicago White Sox 4, Cleveland Guardians 2
Starter

Juan Brito (DH): 0-2, K - Still no hits this spring in three games and three strikeouts. It’s only seven plate appearances, so nothing to worry about. But you certainly want to see some more productive at bats.

Will Wilson (3B): 1-2, RBI - Wilson was a minor league Rule 5 selection of the Guardians this winter, a former first rounder with major hit tool issues and a questionable SS glove. He singled off Justin Dunn, a former Mets first rounder who is now 29 and has over 100 major league innings.

Reserves

Micah Pries (LF): 1-2, 2B - Pries’ double came off former White Sox first rounder and oft-injured Peyton Pallette. Good hit, but Pallette hasn’t progressed yet. He did play left field, which is notable since CJ Kayfus should have a chance to claim Triple-A 1B this year and Pries will be squeezed out there, and the OF will be crowded between DeLauter, Rodriguez and Halpin.

Joe Lampe (RF): 1-1, 2B - Lampe socked a 101 MPH double off Jonathan Heasley, who has 130 innings of MLB experience. Lampe got off to a good start in 2024 but tailed off. There is something there and Lampe has speed and defense, so we’ll see if he can put together a full 2025 season.

Jacob Cozart (C): 1-2, 2B - Only 81 off the bat, Cozart doubled off former Cleveland reliever James Karinchak.

Magnus Ellerts (RP): 0.1 - Ellerts needed one pitch to get an out.

Zach Jacobs (RP): 1.1IP, K - Really impressive outing for Jacobs, getting four whiffs on eight swings. He retired MLBers Austin Slater and Josh Rojas too, topping out at 93 with his sinker.

Andrew Misiaszek (RP): 2IP, H, 2K - Solid results for Misiasszek, but he was 90-92 and really only faced Nick Maton as the only MLBer in his outing.

Tommy Mace (RP): 0.1 IP, K - Was 93-95 striking out Dominic Fletcher, which velo wise continues to be an improvement from his normal 90-92, t94, but is it up due to short bursts?

CJ Kayfus (1B): 0-1

Petey Halpin (CF): 0-1

Angel Genao (SS): 0-1, K

Jake Anchia (DH): 0-1

Travis Bazzana (2B): 0-2

Scoreboard:
Cleveland Guardians 12, Milwaukee Brewers 12 (Statcast)
Starters:

Juan Brito (2B): 0-for-1, 2 BBs, DP - Brito was able to reach base twice in the game despite not putting the ball in play. His batting average is down to .100 this spring (1-for-10).

Petey Halpin (CF): 0-for-3, E8F - Not a day to remember for Halpin after he went hitless and committed an error that led to an extra run for the Brewers.

Reserves:

Jorge Burgos (RF): 2-for-2, 2 R, 2 HRs, 3 RBIs - Burgos slugged a solo homerun to lead off the seventh inning and then left the yard once more in the ninth for a two-run bomb to bring the Guardians to within two. He now has 11 total bases in the last three plate appearances. His homeruns were tracked at 106 and 104 mph and the first traveled 414 feet.

Milan Tolentino (PR-SS): 1-for-2, 2 R, HR, RBI - Tolentino followed up Burgos with a homerun in the ninth, and it was an absolute missile. His blast was hit 455 feet and nearly hit 110 mph off the bat. It was the longest homerun of the day and just missed the top five in best exit velocity in baseball on Sunday.

Micah Pries (1B): 1-for-2, RBI - It wasn’t as flashy as the longballs from his predecessors in the order, but Pries showed a clutch gene with a game-tying hit in the midst of a four-run ninth.

Khalil Watson (CF): 1-for-2, R - Watson singled and scored in the ninth inning of Sunday’s tie after squeaking one up the middle.

Joe Lampe (PR-LF): 0-for-2 - Despite an 0-for-2 day, Lampe had the hardest hit ball of the game at 110 mph, but it was spiked into the ground (.440 expected batting average).

Kody Huff (PH): 0-for-0, R, BB - Huff drew a walk in his only plate appearance.

Travis Bazzana (2B): 0-for-2 - An 0-for-2 day for Bazzana, including a ninth-inning at-bat as the game’s tying run.

Will Wilson (3B): 0-for-3 - Three strikeouts on a day to forget for Wilson.

Jose Devers (PR): 0-for-0 - Devers entered as a ninth-inning pinch runner but the game ends on the next at-bat.
Relievers:

Magnus Ellerts (RP): 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BBs, K, WP - Ellerts was able to record a strikeout on Jackson Chourio in his relief appearance that featured three whiffs on the cutter.

Allen Hernandez (RP): 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BBs, K - Hernandez topped out at 96 mph on the radar gun and punched out Jorge Alfaro.

Bradley Hanner (RP): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BBs, 0 Ks - Hanner did a solid job of locating and got swings on pitches on the edge or outside the strike zone.

Tanner Burns (RP): 1.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 BBs, K - Burns surrendered runs in the eighth and ninth innings, including a two-run bomb by former Cleveland prospect Raynel Delgado.

Nick Mikolajchak (RP): 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BBs, 0 Ks - A caught stealing and groundout got the Guardians out of a jam for Mikolajchak out of the bullpen.

Rodriguez homers, Brito still searching for consistency at the plate
Justin Lada
Mar 4

Scoreboard
Seattle Mariners 7, Cleveland Guardians 2 (Statcast)
Starters

Johnathan Rodriguez (LF): 1-3, HR, RBI, K - Rodriguez popped a Luis Castillo fastball over the fence in Arizona, 105 off the bat. Rodriguez is a good fastball hitter but struggled with sliders off of guys in the pen later in this game and didn’t show any progress against breaking stuff. He has played a lot early on this spring, but there’s nothing to read into there more than just getting reps and the team getting a look at him.

Juan Brito (DH): 0-3, K - Brito has six strikeouts in 15 plate appearances. A little troubling for him, though it is early. You would like to see more contact and better swing decisions soon though.

Reserves

Yordys Valdes (SS): 1-1, 2B - Valdes has surprisingly stung the ball this spring. This double was 107 off the bat. Not reading much into it because each of the last two seasons I thought there was more coming from the bat at times only to see that fade out quickly. So it’s hard to buy an early Arizona mirage.

Milan Tolentino (3B): 0-1, K

CJ Kayfus (1B): 0-1 - Kayfus did have a successfully, very close ball-strike challenge, showing his eye for the zone. However, he followed it up with a groundout.

Dayan Frias (2B): 0-1

Kody Huff (C): 0-1, K

Micah Pries (1B): 0-1

Petey Halpin (CF): 0-0, BB - Fouled off two in zone pitches before working a walk. You’d just like to see him do something with those in zone pitches rather than foul them off.

Jason Chourio (LF): 0-1
Relievers

Zach Jacobs (RP): 0.1 IP, K - Came in when Clase’s day was done and threw six pitches to get one out.

Will Dion (RP): 2IP, 3H, ER, 4K - Dion was only 89-91 with the fastball, as usual. I thought he did a good job throwing his curveball for strikes - not always easy in the Arizona conditions. He got some whiffs on the changeup too. Dion looks more to me like someone who should maybe fill an Eli Morgan type role - gain a little on the fastball from being in the bullpen and bringing a good curve and change, and hopefully see his fastball sit more 92-93 than 89-91 as a starter.

Mason Hickman (RP): 0.1IP, H, 3ER, 3BB - Rough day control wise and left the bases loaded where Andrew Misiaszek gave up some inherited runs on Hickman’s behalf. His fastball has begun to settle again at 89-91.

Andrew Misiaszek (RP): 0.2IP, H - The lone hit led to two runs scoring charged to Hickman

SCOREBOARD
Cleveland Guardians 8, Los Angeles Angels 1 (Statcast)
RESERVES

Jonah Advincula (LF): 0-1, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K - Advincula scored a run despite going hitless, just as he did in his only previous major league Spring Training game (3/24/24 at the Reds in Goodyear).

Will Wilson (PR-3B): 1-2, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI - Wilson’s seventh-inning RBI double to center went 409 feet, the longest non-home run of the day in the major leagues and good for third, at least in terms of known distances (more on that later), behind a pair of back-to-back Reds blasts from the sixth inning of the day half of their day-night split-squad (a 418-footer by Tyler Stephenson followed a prodigious 465-foot bomb off the bat of former Cleveland prospect Will Benson).

Next Year in Cleveland is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
Subscribed

Jake Anchia (PH-DH): 0-1, 1 K - Anchia recorded the first out of the seventh as a pinch hitter for Kyle Manzardo is his only action of Tuesday’s contest.

Yordys Valdes (PR-SS): 1-1, 2 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI - Valdes’ seventh-inning two-run homer topped the Guardians exit velo chart for the day at 107.4 MPH, making it two days in a row with an extra-base hit in the 107s for Yordys (His double on Monday left the bat at an even 107.). Whether it topped the Wilson (whom Valdes drove in) in terms of distance is unknown as it is one of two batted balls that Savant doesn’t have a distance listed for. There are two fun facts related to this performance. First, the only reason he didn’t have the hardest-hit ball of the game was that Angels backup C Juan Flores hit a 108 MPH groundout (at a -11 degree launch angle) in the top of the seventh. Secondly, Valdes pinch ran for starting 1B Carlos Santana in the sixth rather than SS Brayan Rocchio in a rare non-position for position Spring substitution.

Kahlil Watson (PR-CF): 0-1, 1 R, 1 K - Watson scored as a pinch runner for starting CF Lane Thomas as part of the Guardians’ four-run sixth-inning (Guardalanche?), but joined Anchia an inning later as the only Cleveland hitters to strike out against Angels star prospect Caden Dana, who struggled mightily yesterday (7 ER on 5 H and 4 BB in 1.0 IP across two frames - both of which he was pulled from). Dana got both strikeouts by starting with a mid-90s four-seamer, going to mid/high-80s off-speed stuff, and then finishing the at-bat off with another fastball.

Johnathan Rodriguez (RF): 0-0, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SF - Rodriguez was the first substitute to enter the game, replacing a possibly-injured Will Brennan in the fifth inning and went on to have a highly productive day at the plate despite the lack of an official at-bat.

Jacob Cozart (C ): 0-1 - Cozart grounded out to second to end the seventh frame in his only plate appearance of the day. Fun Fact: At one degree, this groundout had the lowest positive launch angle of the game.
RELIEVER

Trenton Denholm: 0.2 IP, perfect, 1 K - Denholm, the only Guardians hurler with intact rookie status to take the mound yesterday, got Cleveland out of the third after starter Gavin Williams began to tire by getting Jo Adell to fly out (the other batted ball with no distance data available) on a 91.5 first-pitch MPH four-seamer above the zone and getting Ryan Noda looking at another 91 MPH fastball down the middle, this one at the bottom of the zone, following an unsuccessful ABS challenge by the Angels first baseman. The fact that an entire game would’ve been pitched by veterans had Williams finished the third underscores the fact that we are getting into the heart of the Spring Training schedule.
DID NOT PLAY (INTERESTING CIRCUMSTANCES)

OF Jorge Burgos - No idea if he actually dressed for this game. He was on the list of available minor league camp guys in the Game Notes, but was not on the Travel Roster (Guards Media Relations calls it that even when the game is at home in Goodyear.).

OF Alfonsin Rosario - Speaking of Game Notes/Travel Roster discrepancies, the man involved in the only other one of the Spring so far (was only on the Travel Roster this past Sunday) was again part of a change of plans as he was listed as the scheduled backup LF on the Travel Roster, but ended up scratched in favor of Advincula.

Welcome back to the Guardians Beat newsletter. My name is Tim Stebbins, and this is my first season covering Cleveland for MLB.com. MLB Pipeline is unveiling each team’s Top 30 Prospects list this week, and the Guardians’ rankings are now live. Here’s more from Jim Callis.

Coming off their worst season since 2012, the Guardians rebounded to win 92 games last year and make a run to the American League Championship Series. In similar fashion, their farm system also was one of the most improved in baseball. It contributed seven rookies on the ALCS roster, most notably Kyle Manzardo, Jhonkensy Noel, Brayan Rocchio and Cade Smith.

Spending a record $20.4 million on the Draft helped bolster the system, as Cleveland reeled in the best pure hitter available (Travis Bazzana) with the No. 1 overall pick. It also replenished its pitching supply by handing out seven-figure bonuses to high school arms Braylon Doughty, Joey Oakie and Chase Mobley.

Doughty is the only hurler who ranks among the Guardians' 10 best prospects on our new Top 30. Bazzana and outfielder Chase DeLauter could claim significant roles in the Majors by the end of the season. Outfielder Jaison Chourio and middle infielder Angel Genao played their way onto the Top 100 Prospects list last season, while catcher Cooper Ingle and first baseman C.J. Kayfus enjoyed stunning first full pro seasons after Cleveland encouraged them to adopt more aggressive approaches.

Here's a look at the Guardians' top prospects:

1. Travis Bazzana, 2B (MLB No. 10)
2. Chase DeLauter, OF (MLB No. 36)
3. Jaison Chourio, OF (MLB No. 59)
4. Angel Genao, INF (MLB No. 61)
5. Ralphy Velazquez, 1B
