PHIL MATON
RP, CLEVELAND INDIANS

Indians acquired RHP Phil Maton from the Padres for international bonus pool allotments, optioned him to Triple-A Columbus.
Maton has struggled with the Padres in 2019 with a 7.77 ERA in 21 relief appearances. He's pitched very well in the minors, however, and owns a career 2.04 ERA in his time at the lower levels. He also held his own in 2018 with a 4.37 ERA with 55 strikeouts in 47 1/3 innings, so there still could be a bright future. It's just unlikely he helps in 2019.

he's had 3 cracks at the majors and after two pretty impressive seasons he was really awful this year. I'm excited to have him.
in 2 of those seasons he allowed a homer every 4 innings. Did have 101 K in 90 innings in 17 and 18 but droped to 20 in 24 this year.
Has never had an ERA as high as 3 in any of his minor league stops so obviously he has some potential value. Maybe.

Corey Kluber (arm) is nearing a bullpen session.

Kluber has been playing catch since the end of the month, and has extended his throwing program from 135 to 150 feet. He's been out since the start of May due to a non-displaced fracture of his right ulna. Assuming he starts throwing bullpen sessions in the next week or so, he should head out on a rehab assignment, and could rejoin the Indians' rotation before the middle of August.

Excerpt from a good article posted in Articles:
Rival clubs say the Indians set high values on players and rarely relent. But no matter where the Indians stand in the AL Central, the team’s most logical move will be to send Bauer to a club that wants control of him for two pennant races, and get major-league ready help – say, a starting pitcher and an outfielder – in return

If he was signed by another MLB team, the new team would pay a prorated minimum and the Indians pay the rest.

So, you're saying the Japanese team paid the Indians the remainder of his contract?
No, when the Indians cut a guy with a guaranteed contract the Indians pay him the money and he is a free agent.

Don't you just love releasing guys with guaranteed contracts. Rather than pay you to work for them, they would rather pay you to not work for them.

The town I live in hired a school superintendent on a three year contract. After 2 years, she was released from duties( fired) and they paid her not to be there and had to also pay a new superintendent for the 3rd year.

Wish I worked for guaranteed contracts.

Yeah, you're just jealous. Good gig if you can get it.

In the case of Martin, it was worth it to open up the roster slot for a younger option. Fortunately it was not a large contract by MLB standards. 1 year, $3 million

He played approximately 1/3 of the season so at least he only got $2 million for nothing.

We did also lose Castro though.

It's the price of doing business. You lose on Martin, you gain on the Gomes deal. On and on, back and forth unless you simply don't deal.

Dan Otero making a rehab appearance with Mahoning Valley tonight. ... Danny Salazar making another ehab start in Akron tomorrow. ... And an update, sort of, on flame throwing relief prospect James Karinchak ...

Yo @ZackMeisel, any news on James Karinchak? First I heard he was coming back after the Triple A All-Star game, then you mentioned a setback, but he was back throwing? Silence since then...have you heard anything?

Zack Meisel @ZackMeisel
He's throwing in AZ and should be pitching in games out there in the next week-ish
