Any stats on total base runners trend season by season?
Base runners vs runs scored?
Re: GameTime!™
21737A year or two ago I posted numbers on team OBP equaling winning team baseball.
In one of my MANY arguments against the Mike Napoli type players.
If you use the search feature I'm sure you'll find it easily.

Re: GameTime!™
21738I wish a good hitting instructor would get a hold of Zimmer.
I hate the way he crouches. With his tall frame it just takes him too long to unwind with his swing. Too many fastballs blown past him.
Someone needs to get him to stand more straight up and take a far less violent cut.
Put him in a room with Griffey Junior videos for a whole night or something.

Re: GameTime!™
21739I think there is hope HB you probably remember that for a short period he slashed some hits to left field with a shorter swing.
With his speed he'd be deadly like that - and still he has time to learn to turn on certain pitches and hit them out - he does have the power as we know.
It still points to him being an unfinished product and with your boy Naquin shining like he is why not put him in CF again and let Zimmer go to AAA for continued work.
In fact when Melky is ready for RF - that might be the time. I wonder if Naquin sees that up ahead and it's motivating him. He has now proven he has readjusted to the Bigs and deserves to stay up yet Melky will push someone out.
Obviously a ways off but we'll see

Re: GameTime!™
21740I'd be all for it, but again, I don't think Tito likes Naquin's defense in CF. if you remember when Zimmer went down last year they brought Allen up from AA over Naquin in AAA. I just don't think we will see much of Naquin in CF anymore, unless something unusual happens in a game. Injuries or what not.
As good as Naquin is playing I fear his time is short. When Chiz is healthy I bet they go with a platoon of him and Melky in RF. Unless Naquin just blows up and forces their hand. And I bet Naquin is 4th option in CF behind Zimmer, Davis, and Allen.

21742You know something we don't know?
Brantley is a FA next year.
Could be a trade piece at the deadline this year.

Re: GameTime!™
21743I'd be all for it. Nobody loves Brantley more than me. But I'm used to seeing all our good players walk so I won't hold my breath. But welcome a pleasant surprise.

I had some time this morning so I searched up that post of mine I was telling you about. It was actually from August of last year.

A little research while watching the last couple innings ...
Houston has highest BA and OBP in MLB. They are also #1 in runs scored and second most wins in MLB.
LA Dodgers has the second best OBP in league, 5th most runs in MLB and most wins.
Washington has the 3rd best BA and 3rd best OBP in MLB. They've scored the second most runs and have 3rd most wins in MLB.
Texas, Milwaukee, NY Mets, Baltimore, and Tampa are 5 of the top 9 HR hitting teams in MLB.
Only one of the five teams, Texas, is among top 10 in runs scored. 7th.
Texas is 6 games under .500. Milwaukee barely over 500. Mets are 10 games under 500. Baltimore is 1 game under 500. Tampa is 2 games over 500.

Re: GameTime!™
21745My point of the post at the time was to say there seems to be a correlation between getting on base a lot and scoring runs and winning games. There is no such correlation between hitting a lot of home runs and scoring a lot of runs and winning games.
My point at the time was we needed more OBP type guys and to forget about the Mike Napoli type guys.
And BTW, as long as I'm talking about this... There is no bigger fan of Kipnis than me. I've asked to be patient with him and didn't want to trade him during offseason. But it is beyond time to drop him in lineup. Just cannot have a guy who is not getting on base batting 2nd. Drop him to 9th till he gets out of this funk. Bat Jose 2nd, Brantley 3rd, and EE 4th.
If he don't get out of this funk before too long it might be time to start looking to something different... Gonzalez at 2nd ... or my preference, Jose back to 2nd and Yandy at 3rd.

Re: GameTime!™
21746I believe in the OBP correlation with Runs Scored but Wins depends on your pitching.
Takes 3 Solo HRs to equal a Bunt, a Bloop and a Blast.

Re: GameTime!™
21747I wouldn't argue with that. Of course your best teams are going to get on base, score, and have good pitching.
For instance the world champ Astros. They are 3rd in OBP this year, and first in team ERA. Have 3rd most wins in league at 24, behind Boston and Yanks with 26 apiece.
Yankees and Boston. Both in top 5 in team OBP. But only 7th and 10th in team ERA. And killing it at 26 wins. Those are the two organizations that really take pride in developing patient hitters who work a count, draw walks, and get on base.
Atlanta. They are 1st in team OBP so far this year. Only 9th in team ERA and only 11th in HR. But in 1st place with 22 wins.
Our Indians have hit 3rd most HR's in league, and have one of the top starting rotations. But playing 500 ball. Which I think might be an argument for a strong bullpen.

Re: GameTime!™
21748So just looking again at runs scored, for this year ...
Atlanta is 1st in OBP and 3rd in runs scored.
Yankees are 2nd in OBP and 1st in runs.
Red Sox are 5th in OBP and 3rd in runs.
Houston is 3rd in OBP and 5th in runs scored.
.
Indians are 3rd in HR's but 12th in runs scored. If you get my drift.
Angels are leading the majors in homers and 4th in runs scored. But they are also among top 10 in OBP
The one outlier seems to be Toronto. They are 2nd in home runs in majors. 6th in runs scored. But only 20th in OBP.

Re: GameTime!™
21749Tito finally dropped Kip. He's hitting 7th tonight. I would have went at least 8th, behind Naquin. But this works. Brantley is batting 2nd with Jose 3rd. I like that.
Re: GameTime!™
21750Lindor leads the team in many offensive categories. Don't know why he's leading off.
I might go with Brantley, Lindor, Ramirez.
