Does anyone know when/why they started playing the National Anthem before the players take the field? I remember seeing all of them standing out there, with their caps held over their hearts, but I'm not sure when the last time I saw that was.

I know it was done in the '40's. My mother remembered Indians 2B Joe Gordon taking off his cap to reveal his bald head.

Well, I wasn't alive for the forties, so it must have been after that!

Actually it was first played in 1918 during world war 1
In 1918, during the heart of America 's involvement in World War One, the Americans were assigned the right flank of a large Allied army commanded by the French. The bugle sounded and the Americans along with their French and English allies rose and marched forward towards the German trenches. The Germans opened fire with their machine guns and the Americans were cut to pieces.
American General "Blackjack" Pershing refused to allow his army to be controlled by the French and planned his own attack for the next morning. During the night, groups of Americans soldiers, familiar with the way Native Americans fought, snuck slowly out of their entrenchments and crawled towards the German lines. When they got within 100 yards of the Germans, they would lay quietly while others followed their lead. By morning several hundred Americans were in position in front of the German lines, some getting as close as 20 paces.
In the morning when the bugle sounded the charge, the Germans thought they had time but the Americans were on them in a hurry. Soon, the Germans broke, and then ran for their lives. The Americans were victorious.
In the United States during a baseball game played at Ebbets Field, a message was put on the scoreboard announcing the victory. Some fans then stood and began to sing the National Anthem. Slowly, more and more people stood to join in until by the end of the song, everyone in the stadium had stood up and were singing.
From that day till the present, the National Anthem has been sung at every baseball game played in America .

Indians announce May 31 fan ticket exchange opportunity


The Cleveland Indians today announced plans to accommodate fans who experienced lengthy weather related delays on Friday, May 31st for the Indians vs. Rays game at Progressive Field.

In an effort to present alternatives to those May 31st fans that experienced extraordinary rain delays and the subsequent after midnight re-start, the Indians will soon be providing fans the opportunity to exchange their ticket to one of two future games. Both future games are Sugardale Dollar Dog Nights and feature post-game fireworks. The Indians are adding a post-game fireworks show to July 31st and rescheduling the postponed May 31st fireworks show, presented by Wayside Furniture, to September 6th.

Fans will be able to exchange their May 31st tickets for one of two games:

Wednesday, July 31st vs. Chicago White Sox

Sugardale Dollar Dog Night
NEWLY ADDED — post-game fireworks
Friday, September 6th vs. New York Mets

Fans holding tickets dated Friday, May 31st, will soon be able to exchange their tickets for one of either July 31st or September 6th, subject to availability. “We are always striving to provide our fans the best experience possible at Progressive Field and wanted to make it right for the fans who endured the lengthy weather delays and ultimate after midnight re-start,” said Cleveland Indians President Mark Shapiro. “By providing make-up opportunities on either July 31st or September 6th, which will both include Sugardale Dollar Dogs and post-game fireworks, fans will have the opportunity to have a positive and memorable ballpark experience.”

Added Shapiro, “We value each and every one of our fans and want to thank them for staying at some or all of the May 31st game. We appreciate their loyalty, patience and perseverance.”

I'm checking the daily transaction list for DFA'd lefties. There are two today. Never heard of either but they were 2nd round and 3rd round draft picks. One with plenty of experience, Wade LeBlanc, the other just a little time with the Twins, Tyler Robertson. We need to go fishing for at some arms to replace Hill, Hagadone and sometimes Barnes.
