Young Guardians Player Is Struggling In Winter Ball

By Andres Chavez December 29, 2023

Infielder Gabriel Arias has been one of the best prospects in the Cleveland Guardians organization for several years now.

He was acquired in 2021 in the Mike Clevinger trade with the San Diego Padres and had a promising season that year in Triple-A.

After that, his offensive development has stalled somewhat.

He has made the majors, and has a disappointing .207/.282/.348 line in 402 plate appearances, with 11 home runs and four stolen bases.

His 77 wRC+ (100 is considered league-average offense, so anything below that is not ideal) indicates his offensive shortcomings, even though his glove is good.

Even though he got to play 122 games for the Guardians this season, the organization decided to send him to winter ball in hopes he could get hot with the stick, learn, and build some confidence.

Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case.

“Arias in 26 games is hitting .222 with zero HR’s and a .563 OPS. 24-108, 7R, 9(2B), 7RBI, 2SB, 3BB, 25SO, .222 AVG, .563 OPS,” Guardians Prospective tweeted.

Arias is playing in the Liga de Beisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente (LBPRC), Puerto Rico’s Winter League.

As you can see, the results have not been satisfactory.

The Guardians got Arias playing time at shortstop, first base, third base, second base, and even the outfield this year.

Considering the overall offensive picture in Cleveland, he might be running out of chances if he doesn’t start showing something with the bat.

The team needs quality hitters at several positions, so despite his defensive chops, Arias needs to hit if he is going to keep his place in the organization’s future plans.

Gigantes and Cangrejeros will go to the finals

December 31, 2023 • 2:44pm

What happened in the regular season is a thing of the past, they say. But if trends do not change in the postseason, that saying will not become a fact.

And until proven otherwise, the statistics say that the Cangrejeros de Santurce and the Gigantes de Carolina will be the teams that will win the semifinals that begin on Tuesday and lead to the final series of the Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League.

Santurce faces Criollos de Caguas in one of the semifinals, while Carolina will play Leones de Ponce in the other.

Santurce defeated Caguas 6-2 in their particular series, as well as Carolina defeated Ponce in the same stage, according to the statistics provided by Professor Eddie Rivera Traverso.

In the regular season, Santurce almost doubled the runs he scored against Caguas versus those he allowed to that team. That relationship was 30 runs scored versus 17 allowed.

Caguas, however, was the tournament's co-leader in runs scored with 150, tied with the Indios de Mayagüez, who are eliminated. But the team that scored the least was Santurce, precisely their rival in the semifinals.

Caguas strengthened its offense for the semifinals with Edwin Ríos and Danny Ortiz . The Cangrejeros were strengthened with third baseman Emmanuel Rivera and right-handed pitcher Daryl Thompson , who had a 2.09 ERA and a 6-1 record in 10 outings with the Indians.

On the other hand, the Giants scored 38 runs off Ponce in eight games in the regular season for an average of 4.75 runs per game. Instead, Ponce scored 25 runs for the Giants in that stage.

Carolina, in addition, was the best local team in the tournament by playing with a 13-7 record in its Roberto Clemente stadium, which was the stadium where the fewest home runs were hit (5) and which tied for second place in fewest runs scored ( 117). Carolina, in fact, has home advantage in the series against Ponce.

Santurce and Carolina were also the best two teams in the regular season and fought for the leadership of the standings until the last day of the calendar.

Although Caguas finished with the same record as Ponce, 21-19, the Leones placed third in the standings having won the particular series against the Criollos.

The RA12, meanwhile, was in the basement with 11-29.

Today, Saturday, the reinforcement draw will take place. Each team will be able to choose up to a maximum of two players from Mayagüez and RA12.

looks like Rocchio is having a good winter. He will have a solid chance to be the opening day SS. He's rated our top prospect on MLB.com Baseball America rates him behind DeLauter. They say:
The Future: There are no shortage of options to become Cleveland’s shortstop of the future, but Rocchio is the most likely answer and could win the job as soon as Opening Day. He has Gold Glove upside as a defender and should be a solid piece of the lineup.

In a perfect day for Wilson García, with Yasiel Puig who once again displayed all his power and in which Junior Guerra behaved like a true “ace” against one of the most fearsome sluggers in the playoffs, the Sharks of La Guaira found the way to remain undefeated in this edition of the round-robin, after beating the Margarita Braves on Friday night by a final score of 8-4. Although it was the islanders who went ahead, with a solo home run by David Rodríguez in first inning, the Sharks response did not take long because in the final part of that first inning, García began his excellent evening with a double batting in the tying run. Shortly after, Puig's first homer in the Round Robin put the hosts up 3-1. A triple in the right field in the fifth batted in Reginatto and Puig continued the hit parade with a single that made the score 6-2. The win went to Guerra (1-0), after working for five and two-thirds innings, in which he allowed five hits and three runs, while walking one and striking out four opponents. Meanwhile, the setback fell on the shoulders of Dylan Unsworth (0-1), after receiving punishment for eight hits and four runs in just three innings with no walks and two strike outs

Leones left Cardinals on the field. Gabriel Lino's home run in the ninth forced the extra inning. With the Cardinals three outs away from achieving their first victory. Gabriel Lino appeared with a home run to left field that tied the game at four. It would be in the 11th inning that the game would be decided. José Ascanio came to relieve. Balbino Fuenmayor singled. César Hernández walked, Gabriel Lino tried to sacrifice but his bunt was too hard and Ascanio forced the runner at third. With men on first and second it was Oswaldo Arcia's turn, with a full count he hit a hard ground ball for first that seemed to end the inning. Rangel Ravelo took the ground ball, threw to second where Jermaine Palacios forced Lino, but Palacios over threw first in search of the double play which allowed César Hernández to score the winning run. Anthony Vizcaya achieved his second victory of this Round Robin, retiring the side in the 10th and 11th innings, allowing two hits and striking out four. Ascanio took the loss with two thirds innings and one run.
