Stars have offense and good pitching to win fifth crown

SAN PEDRO DE MACORÍS, RD.- The Stars have a good offense, a good pitching staff and a solid defense for the Final Series that will begin this Monday (7:30 pm), at the Tetelo Vargas Stadium, against the Cibao Giants.

The Stars then pulled within 5-3 on an eighth-inning run on a Yamaico Navarro homer to left field against reliever Jake Sanchez.

The Giants, for their part, expanded the lead to 6-3 with Hansel Alberto's RBI single to left field against reliever Wirfin Obispo and Sirí (BB) scored.

The Giants tied the final series 1-1 in the best of 7 series which continues this Wednesday at the Tetelo Vargas Stadium, in San Pedro de Macorís.

The Estrellas ended a streak of eight wins in a row, seven of them in the Round Robin and one in the final, on the first day.

The Giants winner was starter Alexander (1-0), who saw action on the mound for 6.0 innings, four hits, two earned returns, four walks and three strikeouts, and the save went to Juan Minaya when he pitched 1.0 inning with a strikeout. It is his first save of the series finale.

Ríos lost (0-1) with 4.2 innings in the box, four hits, five earned runs, three walks and three strikeouts.

Caribes defend their home and went ahead in the Grand Finals 1-0

Twice the Caribes de Anzoátegui came back, taking advantage of the rival's miscues, to beat the Navegantes del Magallanes this Tuesday 6-5 in the first game of the Grand Finals of the LVBP 2021-2022 season.

Magallanes took the lead in the first inning with a solo home run by Ángel Reyes. They extended their lead to 3-0 in the fourth when, after three consecutive walks by starter Yohan Pino, sacrifice flyouts by Leonardo Reginatto and Jesse Castillo.

"The Caribes", however, cut into the lead with one run in the fourth inning after a home run by Willians Astudillo. They tied the game in the sixth with back to back base hits by Astudillo and Asdrúbal Cabrera against the Turkish starter Junior Guerra.

Magallanes answered and regained control of the game between the seventh and eighth- with a hit by Arturo Nieto and a double by Alejandro De Aza.

But once again the Caribes responded. This time against Anthony Vizcaya who, after hitting Niuman Romero and allowing a single to Astudillo, followed up by two wild pitches and later the decisive hit by Balbino Fuenmayor.

Astudillo was the highlight, finishing 2-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, as well as a defensive gem.

Lester Oliveros (1-0) scored the victory by getting the last out of the eighth for Magallanes, who had just regained the lead. Vizcaya (0-1) charged with the setback and Silvino Bracho (1) scored the save.

The series continues on Wednesday in Puerto La Cruz.

Caimanes came from behind and took a 2-1 lead in the Playoff

A triple by Taiwanese Tsung Che Cheng to drive in two runs in the fourth inning was decisive for the 9-7 victory of Caimanes over Cowboys, which put Barranquilla up 2-1 in the final Playoff of the Colombian Professional Baseball League.

Cheng's shot off reliever Yeizer Marrugo brought Sandy León and Brallan Pérez to the plate. Later, the eastern player also scored thanks to a double by Harold Ramírez to put the game 8-6 in favor of his team.

Cheng, who went 1-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, also made a brilliant defensive play by catching Reynaldo Rodriguez's dangerous fly ball in the sixth with runners on first and third.

Caimanes recovered from a two-run deficit in the first, in which starter Luis Escobar walked three and could only hang one out.

Brayan Buelvas scored for Cowboys, after a single by José Martínez, who also scored taking advantage of a sacrifice fly by Andrés Angulo.

Caimanes tied the game in the bottom of the first after a single by Dilson Herrera, who drove in Carlos Arroyo and Harold Ramírez.

Cowboys took the lead again with four runs in the second against Luis De Ávila, who opened the inning by giving up three straight walks. Meibrys Viloria hit a single that drove in Dayan Frías and then Reynaldo Rodríguez, with a double, brought Buelvas and Martínez to the plate. A groundout to shortstop by Angulo also allowed Viloria to score to make it 6-2.

In the third, Caimanes closed the gap with three runs, after Cheng and Ramírez were walked by starter Ángel Ventura. Carlos Martinez doubled for Cheng to score, and Dilson Herrera hit a sacrifice fly to deep left that scored Ramirez. Then, a double by Cabrera, drove in Martínez.

In the fifth, Angulo tripled and then scored on a ground out to second baseman Jesús Marriaga to narrow the score to 8-7.

In the seventh, Caimanes scored their ninth run after Manuel Joseph was walked, Dilson Herrera connected with an infield hit and Robinson Cabrera sacrificed with a bunt to advance the runners. Roberto Caro hit a sacrifice fly for Joseph to score from third.

The winning pitcher was Fernando Pérez, who pitched three innings, allowed one hit, one run, one walk and struck out two. The three pitchers who followed did not allow runs: Sugar Ray Marimón (1.0), Donald Goodson (2.0) and David Méndez (1.0). The latter achieved his second game saved in the Playoff.

The loss went to Yeizer Marrugo, who pitched one inning, allowing three hits, three runs, no walks and no strikeouts.

The fourth game of this series will be this Wednesday (7:30 pm) at the Édgar Rentería stadium.

SPECTACULAR TRIUMPH OF TOMATEROS TO TIE THE FINAL SERIES AT 2 GAMES EACH

Culiacan, Sinaloa; January 18, 2022 (Prensa Tomateros).- Tomateros de Culiacán managed to tie the Final Series at two wins per team.

Stevie Wilkerson's infield hit drove home the winning run and Culiacan beat the Charros de Jalisco 3-2, in the fourth game of the Final Series of the 2021-2022 Championship Season of the Mexican Pacific League (LaMP).

The bottom of the 8th started explosively against right-handed reliever Jared Wilson. Sebastián Elizalde hit a line drive off the fence in right field and swept into third base with a triple, arousing a thunderous applause.

The next batter, Joey Meneses, walked. Wilson then dominated Víctor Mendoza with a fly out to right field for the first out. Then, Stevie Wilkerson hit a grounder that Wilson deflected with his foot and allowed both Elizalde's to score and Wilkerson to reach with the infield hit.

Charros tied the game in the top half of the 9th inning. José Juan Aguilar led off the inning with a single off Derrick Loop and Esteban Quiroz advanced him to second with a sacrifice bunt. There, Benjamin Gil brought in right-hander Zach Hartman from the bullpen, who was greeted with an RBI single by Christian Villanueva.

Japhet Amador then continued the drive with a base hit to center field. Alejandro Osuna ran for Villanueva. The next batter Dariel Alvarez lined out to center field as Jesus Fabela made a sliding catch. After getting the out, he got up and threw to third, where Emmanuel Ávila tagged Osuna out to end the inning.

The visitors scored their first run of the game in the fifth inning. Missael Rivera, who replaced the injured José Manuel Rodríguez, negotiated a walk against the starter José Luis Bravo. Amadeo Zazueta flied outl to center field and Fernando Flores grounded to second. Rivera moved to second.

Bravo walked José Juan Aguilar and then Benjamín Gil replaced him with lefty Óliver Pérez.

Esteban Quiroz greeted Pérez with a single to right field. Missael Rivera tried to score from second, but Sebastián Elizalde threw to the plate, where Alexis Wilson applied the tag and Rivera was out. However, Charros appealed the marking and Rivera was awarded the run after the review.

Tomateros took the lead during the bottom of the 4th. With one out, Joey Meneses worked the pitcher for a walk and Víctor Mendoza reached first after being hit with a pitch. Efrén Navarro struck out but Alexis Wilson produced the first run on a single to center field and later, Emmanuel Ávila added the second with another hit.

This Wednesday the fifth game of the series will be played at the house of the Guinda Nation. For the Tomateros, Anthony Vásquez will be the starter and for the Charros, also left-handed Orlando Lara. The duel is agreed to start at 8:05 p.m. in central Mexico.
