Águilas Cibaeñas wins championship!

The team of the Cibaeñas Eagles won 11-5 at the Tigres del Licey to be crowned professional baseball champion of the Dominican Republic. The game was celebrated before a full house at the Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal in the Dominican capital.

The Cibaeñas Eagles will leave this Thursday at 10 in the morning for Mexico to represent the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Series. The team will travel along with Puerto Rico, according to the information provided by the leadership of the Baseball League of the Dominican Republic (LIDOM).

It is the first time that the team of the Cibao wins in a final, on the road, at Licey, where, during the day, lived moments of great excitement from the fans of both teams.
The Eagles will be reinforced by Raúl Valdez, Abiatal Avelino and Wirfin Obispo for the sports event that brings together Mexico, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic each year.

The Mexican starter Rolando Valdez for the Licey lost control in the third and paid for it. He awarded a walk to Ronny Rodriguez, Jonathan Villar dragged a base hit down the first base line, Junior Lake also reached on a walk to load the bases and Danny Santana singled to right producing one run.

Licey threatened in the third, with two outs, on a Julio Borbón double and a walk to Erick Aybar, but Ronny Rodríguez made a great catch on a grounder by Yamaico Navarro to finish the inning.

In the opening of the fourth inning, Juan Francisco homered to cut the lead to (5-1).
Already in the fifth Maya allowed Emilio Bonifacio to open the inning with a hit to right, Sergio Alcántara followed him with a single in the same area that placed runners at the corners. Jhan Maríñez, singled to center and entered the second blue run.

In the sixth the Aguilas again stepped on the plate. Juan Carlos Perez singled, then stole second, Marlon Arias went to pitch, who allowed a run producing single to center by Villar and dominated Lake on a high fly to right and Santana with line out to the shortstop.

But the blue scored in the seventh and closed the lead to 6-4. Abel de los Santos walked Sebastián Valle and Bonifacio hit a double that placed men on third and second. Up to the mound came Richard Rodriguez, who struck out Alcántara and Borbón, but Aybar singled for the pair of runs.

The Eagles got a run back in the eighth on a home run by Felix Perez and put the game out of reach with a four run rally in the top of the ninth inning to put the scoreboard at 11-3. Licey would score a run in the bottom half of the inning to place the final score at 11-4.

CUBA OPENS WINNING OVER VENEZUELA
GUADALARA, JAL. February 2, 2018 (LMP.mx) - If this day is to be judged, the Caribbean Series promises plenty of emotions. Excellent start to the series with a very good game that the Alazanes of Granma of Cuba won 6 - 4 to the Caribes de Anzoátegui, champions of Venezuela.

The second game of the series will continue with the duel between the Criollos de Caguas of Puerto Rico and Tomateros de Culiacan de Mexico.

The contest found its definition in the bottom of the fifth with the score tied 2 - 2, the Cubans scored a run on a hit by Raul Gonzalez, sacrifice by Roel Santos and after a single by Yordan Menduley, Yurisbel Gracial came to produce the run on a sacrifice fly to center.

Cuba scored twice in the bottom of the seventh when the Caribbean team managed to do some damage to three Creole pitchers. Gracial and Alexander Ayala had a pair of rbi hits.

The game had started with the Alazanes scoring two in the first inning against Daryl Thompson (0-1) after Santos's single combined and advanced to third on an error by the left fielder scoring immediately on a hit by Manduley. Gracial doubled to the left batting in Manduley.

Gracial closed the day with three rbi's and two hits.

Venezuela scored a run in the third on back to back singles by Luis Sardiñas and Rafael Ortega placing runners on the corners. Sardiñas would come home when Niuman Romero grounded into a double play.

The game was tied in the fourth thanks to Luis Jimenez's long homer to right field, this off of starter and winner Lázaro Blanco (1-0).

The third Creole run arrived in the top of the eighth on a double by Rene Reyes and a single by Balbino Fuenmayor.

The sixth Cuban run was recorded in the bottom of the eighth when Yulian Milan took advantage of an error by shortstop Gonzalez.

Blanco was the winner working six full innings on two runs with five hits, three walks and five strikeouts. Raidel Martinez achieved the save by removing the last batter of the game after relieving his predecessor Miguel Lahera who pitched 2 and two thirds of an inning.
Martinez did not finish the game without allowing a fourth run to score.

For his part, the defeat was placed on Thompson after giving up three scores and nine hits in four and a third innings without giving away any walks and striking out two.

GUADALARA, JAL. February 2, 2018 (LMP.mx) - After the inaugural celebration, the tension of a good game was defined in the eighth inning. A rally of three runs in the top of the eighth inning spoiled the party for the home team and was finalized when the Criollos de Caguas of Puerto Rico defeated by 7 - 4 the Tomateros of Mexico.

It was the closing of a great inaugural day of the LX edition of the Caribbean Series, which earlier began with the triumph of Cuba against Venezuela.

The rally mounted by Puerto Rico came in that eighth inning when, with the score tied at four, the Criollos took advantage of the Mexican bullpen to sentence the result.

Against the loser Casey Coleman (0-1), the Criollos opened with a double by Anthony Garcia. With one out, David Vidal's second hit of the game would be enough to break the tie.

A base hit by Ruben Gotay would place runners on the corners was followed by a wild pitch that brought another run to the plate. Dayron Verona's run scoring triple to center against Nick Struck, placing the score board at 7 - 4.

The game was witnessed by 16 thousand 500 spectators.

The Criollos took the joy from the local fans in the second inning by scoring twice against Mexican starter Edgar Gonzalez, after one out, came singles by David Vidal, Ruben Gotay and Dayton Verona to fill the bases. Vidal would score on a bases loaded walk and Gotay would score on an infield single.

They achieved one more run in the third on a single by Jesmuel Valentín, a wild pitch, and a double by Anthony Garcia to left. In that same inning, with two outs, there was an attempted theft of home by Garcia, a move that after the review was sentenced as an out.

The first Mexican score in the second was produced by Gabriel Gutierrez's single to the right field and a double by Ronnier Mustelier.

The Tomateros returned to tighten the score in the bottom of the third achieving their second score thanks to Japhet Amador's sacrifice fly that batted in Sebastian Elizalde who opened the round with a drag bunt single.

They rallied in the fourth scoring a pair of runs the would reverse the lead going up 4 - 3 both produced by Elizalde's single that brought the plate Mustelier and Issmael Salas.

However, Puerto Rico tied the game at the top of the fifth. A base hit by Irving Falu, a wild pitch advancing him to second, was followed by a run producing hit by Garcia.

For the Criollos their starter Adalberto Flores delivered work of four innings of four runs with six hits, a walk and a strike out, leaving the game without a decision.

For the Tomateros, Edgar Gonzalez also without decision after working four and two-thirds innings of four runs with eight hits, two walks and one strikeout.

Anthony Garcia showed off for Puerto Rico by having a three-hit day and produced two runs, with a pair of doubles.

For tomorrow, in the first game of the day, the Dominican Republic will go against Venezuela and in Cuba, against Mexico.

CUBA (ALAZANES DE GRANMA) 6, VENEZUELA (CARIBES DE ANZOATEGUI) 4

Rene Reyes (Venezuela, starting RF) - 2-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 K - Reyes was not only one of the two Caribes' with a multi-hit effort in Friday's Serie opener, but he also had a good day defensively, including an outfield assist. This is not surprising from a hitter who had a .891 OPS in the regular season. Rene spent the 2017 summer season in the Mexican League.

Luis Sardinas (Venezuela, SS) - 2-3, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 SB, 1 E - Sardinas was easily the offensive star of the game for Anzoategui, reaching base three times in four plate appearances and scoring twice. He is currently under contract to the Baltimore Orioles, where he split 2017 between the major league club and Triple-A Norfolk.

Liarvis Breto (Venezuela, RP) - 1 IP, perfect, 1 K - Breto was the only Caribes pitcher to get three outs without allowing a run, requiring only nine pitches (six of them strikes) to complete his inning's worth of work (split between the fifth and sixth frames). Breto spent four seasons (three in the Venezuelan Summer League and one in the Dominican Summer League) with the Seattle Mariners organization from 2012-2015. He spent the last two summer seasons with the independent Rockland Boulders of the Canadian-American association (better known as the Can-Am League). He pitched well enough in the Can-Am to be signed by the Detroit Tigers, who are expected to give him his stateside affiliated ball debut this summer in the Gulf Coast League.

Yordan Manduley (Cuba, SS) - 2-3, 2 R, 1 RBI,1 BB,1 K - Manduley scored a third of the Alazanes' runs in their Serie-opening victory. Given Cuba's emphasis on putting together the best possible national team in any international competition they enter, the Granma roster is unsurprisingly refuerzo-heavy. For example, Yordan played for the Cazadores de Artemisa in this year's Serie Nacional.

Yurisbel Gracial (Cuba, RF-LF) - 2-3, 1 2B, 3 RBI, 1 SF - Gracial drove in half of the Cuban runs yesterday. If his name sound familiar, he tied Japan's Tetsudo Yamada for second in stolen bases in last year's World Baseball Classic with three steals (The Cubs' Javier Baez led the tournament with four playing for Puerto Rico).

Lazaro Blanco (Cuba, SP) - W (1-0), 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R (both earned), 3 BB, 5 K, 1 HR allowed - While not a spectacular outing, Blanco pitched well enough to earn the win given the massive run support he received.

PUERTO RICO (CRIOLLOS DE CAGUAS) 7, MEXICO (TOMATEROS DE CULIACAN) 4

Anthony Garcia (Puerto Rico, RF) - 3-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K, 1 CS - Garcia, who signed with the Oakland Athletics this offseason after playing his first nine professional seasons in the St. Louis Cardinals organization, started his Caribbean Series on a high note. Anthony hit .310 with a .854 OPS in 17 games with the Criollos de Caguas in the Puerto Rican regular season after starting the winter campaign hitting .247 with a .797 OPS (including a .195 ISO) in 23 games with the Venezuelan League's Leones del Caracas.

David Vidal (Puerto Rico, 3B) - 2-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI - Vidal's big Serie opener was not a surprise as he hit .373/.500/.647 for the Criollos in the regular season. He also played in Venezuela (for the Aguilas del Zulia) while waiting for the hurricane-delayed LBPRC season to begin.

Ruben Gotay (Puerto Rico, 1B) - 2-4, 2 R, 1 K - Gotay, unlike the Criollos other two offensive stars in yesterday's game, did not play any winter ball prior to the start of the Puerto Rican season. Ruben last played affiliated baseball for the 2014 Louisville bats (Cincinnati Reds Triple-A) before spending two seasons with the Saraperos de Saltillo of the Mexican League and 2017 with the independent Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League.

Fernando Cruz (Puerto Rico, RP) - 2 IP, 1 H - Cruz's solid fifth and sixth innings represented the best effort by a Caguas pitcher on Friday. Fernando has spent the last two summers with the New Jersey Jackals of the Can-Am League after being cut by the Chicago Cubs organization following the 2015 season.

Sebastian Elizalde (Mexico, RF) - 2-5, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 CS - Elizalde's multi-hit, multi-RBI effort was the offensive highlight of the Tomateros' Serie-opening loss. Sebastian is a Reds prospect who spent the entire 2017 season with Triple-A Louisville.

Jose Isidro Marquez (Mexico, RP) - 1.1 IP, perfect, 2 K - Marquez struck out half of the batters he faced in a perfect relief effort. Jose is completing his second professional season, both spent playing the summer season for the Piratas de Campeche of the Mexican League followed by a winter campaign with the Pacific League's Mayos de Navojoa. Yesterday was his Caribbean Series debut.

Niuman Romero (Venezuela, 3B) - 0-4, 1 BB, 1 K - Romero started a playoff round with a hitless effort for the third time in four rounds this postseason (he had one hit in his Serie Final debut).

Felipe Paulino (Venezuela, RP) - 0.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R (both earned), 2 BB - Paulino, who was picked up by Anzoategui as a refuerzo from the runner-up Cardenales de Lara prior to the Serie, struggled for his second straight outing (his last appearance in the LVBP Serie Final saw him allow two earned runs on as many hits and a walk in one inning of work.

Derrick Loop (Mexico, RP) - 1 IP, 1 H, 2 K - Loop pitched a solid top of the ninth inning to give the Tomateros a chance at a comeback in the bottom of the frame. While the Culiacan lineup failed to rally, the loss was in no way Derrick's fault.

THE CARIBBEAN EXPLOIT, TRIUMPH FOR VENEZUELA

GUADALARA, JAL. February 3, 2018 (LMP.mx) - Balbino Fuenmayor was this Saturday afternoon the lethal weapon of an explosives Caribes de Anzoátegui, with a pair of homers, double and two singles with five runs batted in. Venezuela defeated by a score of 14 - 4 over the Cibaeñas Eagles of the Dominican Republic.

The second day of the Caribbean Series 2018 saw the Caribs explode with an offense of twenty hits, including four home runs and seven doubles.

In addition to Fuenmayor, who became the seventh player to connect for five hits in a game in the Caribbean Series, Rafael Ortega and René Reyes added home runs, providing a pair of rbi's each.

The Eagles did not have a good start to the series with their pitching battling against the strong rival line-up. Their best offensive spark came in the fifth inning when they scored three times, all on a three run homer by Hector Gomez.

With the result Venezuela evens its record with a victory and a defeat, having to face tomorrow the Tomateros local team from Mexico. For their part, the Dominican will face in the first game of the day the Criollos de Caguas of Puerto Rico.

Lone Fuenmayor home run in the second and two runs in the third sent the Caribs to an early lead of 3 - 0, all runs against the defeated Raul Valdez (0-1).

After adding one in the fourth, Fuenmayor brought two run home on a double in the fifth. The grand rally would arrive in the seventh with a four run rally thanks to two home runs each by Ortega and Reyes.

The Caribs did not leave the game without hurting the Dominican team in the eighth inning, scoring five times, on run producting doubles by Willians Astudillo and Alexis Amarista.

For the Caribs, starter Freddy Garcia left without a decision after working four and two-thirds innings giving up three runs and six hits, with one walk and one strike out. The triumph was credited to Cesar Jimenez who worked an inning in relief without allowing hit.

Alazanes come from behind to defeat the Tomateros 5 - 4

The second game of the day in the Caribbean series where Mexico would look against Cuba for a victory that would get them into the second round saw the Cuban team again with their timely batting beat the Charro team 5 - 4.

The Mexicans would take advantage in the very first inning when Rico Noel's single to center would bat in the first run for the charros on the legs of Justin Grenne . Alazanes would react to take the lead in the game in the bottom of the third inning. The Alzanes scoring would start with Yurisbel Gracial sacrifice fly, then on a double by Frederich Cepeda, the Alazanes would reverse the score board at 2 - 1.

Mexico would manufacture a rally of 3 runs in the top part of the fourth inning to take the lead 4 - 2.

Cuba would again demonstrate all of their timely batting in the bottom of the seventh inning by scoring two runs to tie the game at 4 - 4. The final thrust would take place in the bottom of the eighth inning when Raúl González batted in Céspedes with a sacrifice fly to right taking the 5 - 4 lead and eventual win. .

Cuba would get the victory that brings them closer to qualifying for the second round and Mexico has dangerously two defeats.

DOMINICAN'S BREAK THROUGH TO DEFEAT PUERTO RICO 6 - 3
GUADALARA, JAL. February 4, 2018 (LMP.mx) - When you get up early, baseball helps you. The Eagles of the Dominican Republic broke a terrible stretch of eleven consecutive defeats in the Caribbean series by defeating the Creoles of Puerto Rico this Sunday afternoon by 3 runs.

Good result of the Dominican squad that thus equaled its record at 1 - 1 in the 2018 edition of the Latin series was triumphant over the undefeated Puerto Rican squad.

The Dominicans scored early on back to back singles by Abiatal Paulino and Juan Pérez followed by a wild pitch that advanced both runners. Edwin Espina produced the two runs with a base hit to right.

In the next inning, the three run rally started with a single by Héctor Gómez, double by Carlos Paulino. The bases would be loaded would be filled when Gustavo Nuñez would be hit by pitch.

The situation was used by the Eagles to score one on Abiatal Paulino's single, another with Pérez's sacrifice fly and the third on Junior Lake's hit.

GUADALARA, JAL. February 4, 2018 (LMP.mx) - The Caribs of Venezuela applied the formula to get their second win of the series by defeating the Tomateros de México 6 - 4 and placing them on the verge of elimination.

A home run by Willians Astudillo in the sixth inning and a double by Niuman Romero in the seventh were the decisive hits connected on by the Caribs, who thus achieved their second victory against a defeat.

Meanwhile, six pitchers combined to limit the Tomateros. The starter and winner Néstor Molina (1-0) worked five innings and a third of two runs and five hits, with one walk and four strikeouts.

For the Tomateros starter Rolando Valdez who left without decision after four innings surrendered two runs on five hits, two walks and four strike outs.

PUERTO RICO EXPLODES AND DEFEATS VENEZUELA

GUADALARA, JAL. February 5, 2018 (LMP.mx) - Luck changed for the Caribs that had shown greater offensive power: today it was the turn of the opponent to give them a spoonful of their own medicine. The Creoles of Puerto Rico exploited in full and with an offensive of 16 hits as they sealed the deal with a triumph of 12 - 7 over the Caribs of Venezuela.

The Puerto Rican bats did not stop against the pitching of the Caribs after the barrage of hits that included four home runs, five doubles and a triple, all against the five pitchers used by the Caribs.

DOMINICANA DEFEATS CUBA 7 - 1

GUADALARA, JAL. February 5, 2018 (LMP.mx) - Bryan Evans not only gave the Águilas del Cibao the start his manager was expecting but also gave the Caribbean Series 2018 the best start by any pitcher in the series. CARIBBEAN SERIES'2018: ALAZANES WIN 6-3 AGAINST CRIOLLOS AND ENSURE THEY PLAY IN THE SEMIFINALS

MEXICO ENJOYS FIRST TRIUMPH

CUBA WILL MAINTAIN INVITATION STATUS IN SC

ZAPOPAN, JALISCO (http://www.cibercuba.com) .- The president of the Confederation of Professional Baseball of the Caribbean (CBPC), the Dominican Juan Francisco Puello, confirmed that Cuba will maintain its guest status within the Caribbean Baseball Series corresponding to year 2019.

Puello pointed out that the obstacle to the inclusion of the Island in the CBPC is the policy of the United States towards Havana. "It is unheard of for politics to define this issue. The Puerto Rican Criollos defeated the Caribs of Venezuela on Wednesday, 6 - 5 to win the first available ticket to play in the championship game of the 2018 Caribbean Series.

The Criollos will face tomorrow the winner of tonight's game between the Alazanes of Cuba and the Eagles of the Dominican Republic.

The ball game today can be divided into a "before" and an "after". The game came to be resolved in the seventh inning with a Puerto Rican attack of two runs with which they changed the fortunes of the game in their favor by taking a 6 - 5 lead.
It was in the bottom of the seventh that the Caribs had just taken the lead 5 - 4 before the decisive attack by the Criollos.

This was the first Grand Slam of the tournament and first since Sebastian Valle did it for Mexico in the Culiacán series in 2017.

The Caribs had gone ahead in the seventh with a run scoring single by receiver Tomás Telis against Robby Rowland (1-0), who in the end was the winning pitcher.

For the Criollos starting the game was Orlando Román, who threw four innings, five hits with pair of runs, two walks and two strikeouts. The save was credited to Miguel Mejía, his second of the series.
For his part, Daryl Thomson was the starting pitcher for Venezuela and was removed after five and one third innings of three runs, four hits, without a walk and six strikeouts.
