The AL manager and both coaches for the 2011 All Star Game will have Cleveland Indian connections.

Ron Washington appeared in 69 games for us in the days of Joe Carter, Cory Snyder, Mel Hall, Tom Candiotti and Greg Swindell.

In fact, John Farrell and Ron Washington were teammates with us in 1988.

Washington will manage, and Manny Acta and John Farrell will coach.

In the 2011 All Star Game in Kansas City.

I have been on a huge Civil War kick lately and have been reading and watching everything I can get my hands on. Last night for the first time I started watching Ken Burn's The Civil War. So far I have been real impressed. I plan on watching his Baseball film soon. I really don't know why it has taken me so long.

I do think this team will need to add another bat. If the Dodgers continue to fall behind I wonder if they will be interested in trading our old friend Casey Blake. He's pretty much what we need - he's right handed, has some pop, plays all four corner positions, is in the last year of his contract, and he's a great guy who will do whatever the team needs him to do.
EVERYBODY IS FULL OF CRAP!!!!!

Yes thus far it doesn't look as good without Grady and Pronk in the lineup....as we get two aboard in the top of the fifth......lets g

My fave present my wife has ever given me was the Burns baseball work. It's all great, but my fave is the 5th episode titled "Shadow Ball." It's largely about the Negro Leagues and stands well for just viewing without the rest of the episodes.

I have The Civil War on VHS tape from the original PBS airing. They are well worn. I picked up the DVD edition for way less than original cost on eBay awhile back. I think the series retailed for over $200 initially, but I think I caught it for less than $50 for my purchase.

I don't think I've ever seen anything by Ken Burns I did not like. My BA is in History and I do watch with a discerning eye. I think he does a very admirable job of making history interesting to those who maybe never paid attention before. And by my observations he stays entirely close to what actually happened.

Rocky Coltrane and I bantered about his National Park series. It was the major inspiration for my wife and I visiting The Grand Tetons last years on our drive cross country. Park rangers told us attendance was well above average, and many visitors cited the series as the reason for their decision to visit.

He just finds a way to identify interesting personal life story lines to build around in his works.

One of his lesser known works I love is Horatio's Drive.

In the spring of 1903, on a whim and a fifty-dollar bet, Dr. Horatio Nelson Jackson set off from San Francisco in a 20-horsepower Winton touring car hoping to become the first person to cross the United States in the new-fangled "horseless carriage." At the time there were only 150 miles of paved roads in the entire country, all of them within city limits. There were no gas stations and virtually no road maps as we know them today. Most people doubted that the automobile had much of a future. Jackson's trip would prove them wrong.

Do 5 inning rainouts count?
The pitcher doesn't control every aspect of how the game goes down. He only controls how well he pitches. I have no problem with 8 inning complete games if his offense negated the need for the 9th inning and he pitched well through the necessary 8.

(by the way, in The Preakness I will be on the local connections in my exotics. Sway Away because I was in his first and only Winner's Circle photo, and Midnight Interlude with Martin Garcia aboard. Martin is the kid who used to work at the deli up the street from me. Super nice and humble guy who is a dream come true story. I'll probably have them in tri's with the field, though I might toss Mucho Macho Man in for a superfecta stab with the three. It's not my normal serious handicapping, but just what I want for my fun bet. I haven't hit The Kentucky Derby with my aggressive chase of the big hit, but I have caught a couple of more than modest Preakness and Belmont wagers. Sway Away and Midnight Interlude can both get good times, and The Preakness has historically often favored speed horses if the track is fast. I'm not touting because it's a calculated crap shoot wager....but it is what I am betting.)
