Starting his second full season in the South Atlantic League, Salcedo showed a good amount of improvement offensively, drawing more walks and starting to tap into his considerable raw power. He has the bat speed and swing to hit for average and power in the future. Originally a shortstop, he did see some time there, but spent most of the year at third, which is more likely his long-term home. He was error-prone, but he has the arm, range and bat to profile at the hot corner.

Not too shabby for full season "A" ball as well as first professional season in baseball. Only drawback to his season was his 45 errors but he was learning a new position (3B) and doing it in full season "A" ball.

Salcedo lost 3 years of professional baseball due to the birth record snafu which was a joke. It's hard to say where he would have ranked on the Indians depth chart but I can imagine him ready for third base duties as early as this season.

With only one season of professional baseball under his belt, the Braves project Salcedo to be ready for the majors by 2014. That's in two more years.

Jeremy Guthrie

In the more settled portion of the rotation, Jeremy Guthrie has been named as the Rockies' Opening Day starter. Guthrie's work is well-regarded. Coming to the Rockies after four seasons with the Orioles, it will be interesting see how Guthrie fares in a situation in which the club he is pitching for is not doomed to a fifth-place finish.

What's new? Another opening day assignment.

Spring numbers look good. It will be interesting to see how well he does in Colorado.

No secret! I was hoping to see Guthrie pitching in Cleveland this year. I'd be interested to see if he can pitch as well as or maybe even better than Lowe, Slowey, or Jimenez for that matter. Pitching in Colorado should definitely be a challenge.

I never let facts get in the way :shock:

Despite those "facts" mentioned above, Guthrie had poor production from his offense. Guthrie's defense was average at best and below average in general.

The most important statistics that no one seems to ever talk about is quality starts. Guthrie is far above league average in that department on a career basis. I measure a good pitcher on the number of quality starts that they register.

2007 17 quality starts = 65% (claimed off waivers from Cleveland by Baltimore)
2008 19 quality starts = 63%
2009 15 quality starts = 45%
2010 20 quality starts = 63%
2011 16 quality starts = 50%

6 year totals 87 quality starts = 56%
league average over those 6 years = 46%

4 straight years with 200+ innings and 30+ starts

Guthrie is an innings eater on average 202 innings the last four seasons for the Orioles. He has looked strong this spring, posting a 2.31 ERA in three Cactus League starts.

While he's a virtual lock for a rotation spot and another 30-plus starts -- he has made at least that many in each of the past four seasons --

I'd like to see how well he does in Colorado in particularly at home.

Don't forget that Guthrie pitched in the American League East the past 6 seasons. I can't help wondering (besides Cliff Lee and CC Sabathia), how well any of our pitchers would have survived six years in the American League East !?!?!?!

4.33 ERA last year. Gives up a ton of homers. No thanks!

Gotta put things in perspective JR. I was looking to upgrade the Indian pitching staff. In my opinion, Guthrie would have been an upgrade no matter how you roll the dice. I don't know how he is going to handle the air in Colorado, but I thought he could handle the atmospheric conditions of Progressive Field.

What was Slowey's and Lowe's combined won / loss record in 2011? 9-25 ?!?!?! :)

Decent debut for Yoenis Cespedes, double and two k's in three trips and the cannon gunned down Suzuki at second base. I don't think too many players will be testing Cespedes' arm.
