Tanner Bibee strikes out six, but Guardians’ rally stalls in 5-4 loss to Giants

Updated: Mar. 10, 2026, 8:25 p.m.|Published: Mar. 10, 2026, 7:00 p.m.

By Paul Hoynes, cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Right-hander Tanner Bibee, in line to be the Guardians’ opening-day starter on March 26 in Seattle, threw 3 2/3 innings Tuesday in a 5-4 spring-training loss to the Giants at Goodyear Ballpark.

Bibee allowed three runs, but they were all unearned because of three Cleveland errors. Bibee was in line to make his first opening day start in 2025 but came down with a case of food poisoning and was unable to pitch.

The errors came back to haunt the Guardians, who staged an ill-fated three-run rally in the ninth.

Bibee, facing a Giants lineup that featured several minor leaguers, struck out six and allowed four hits. He threw 71 pitches, including 52 (71%) for strikes.

The Giants took a 1-0 lead in the third. Jared Oliva doubled with two outs and scored when he stole third base and came home on catcher David Fry’s throwing error.

The Guardians tied the score at 1-1 in the third on consecutive doubles by Angel Martinez and Steven Kwan against Giants starter Seymour Carson with one out.

The Giants broke the tie with three two-out runs in the fourth. Bryce Eldridge opened the inning with a single. Bibee retired the next two batters before Parks Harber sent a grounder to shortstop Gabriel Arias for what should have been the third out.

Arias, however, threw wildly past first as Eldridge scored and Harber went to second. Arias was charged with two errors on the same play, one on the wild throw to first and the second on the failure to catch first baseman CJ Kayfus’ throw to second after he retrieved the ball.

Steven Perez relieved Bibee and Tyler Fitzgerald greeted him with a two-run homer for a 4-1 lead.

The Giants made it 5-1 in the ninth when Trevor Stephan walked former Cleveland catcher Eric Haase with the bases loaded. Stephan, coming back from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, opened the inning with two quick outs before running into trouble.

The Guardians tried to rally in the ninth as Dom Nunez hit a two-run homer to make it 5-3. They made it 5-4 when San Francisco’s Ricardo Estrada was called for a bases-loaded balk with Johnathan Rodriguez at the plate. Estrada, however, struck out Rodriguez to end the game.

The Guardians are 9-9-1 this spring. The Giants improved to 14-3.

Next
The Guardians are off Wednesday. RHP Gavin Williams is scheduled to throw a minor league game at the Goodyear complex so he can stay on his regular turn in the rotation.

Tugboat shines on World Baseball Classic Stage

Arthur Kinney

Mar 14

SCOREBOARD

Los Angeles Angels 5, Cleveland Guardians 2 (Statcast)
United States 5, Canada 3 (Statcast)

WBC

Matt Wilkinson (RP, Canada): 2 IP, 2 BB, 2 K - Tugboat has been a familiar name to Guardians fans and prospect enthusiasts, but after last night a much larger portion of the baseball world knows who he is. While two innings in one game is nearly the ultimate in small sample size, what Wilkinson did last night was certainly exciting: striking out Cal Raleigh and Bryce Harper and retiring a side in order in the eighth that included Alex Bregman, Roman Anthony, and Raleigh - oh, and in a fairly high leverage situation (Canada still in the game being only two runs down) late in a single-elimination game. Hopefully, this provides Matt with some serious momentum going into the 2026 MiLB campaign.

STARTERS

STARTERSDayan Frias (3B): 1-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K - Frias, who was a late add to the starting lineup after Daniel Schneemann was scratched with a right ankle sprain incurred during infield practice, impressed in his return from the World Baseball Classic with an effort that included yesterday’s only extra-base hit from a prospect (86.9 MPH exit velo on the sixth-inning double).

Juan Brito (2B): 0-2, BB, 1 K - Walks have been the story of Brito’s March, with six free passes compared to only two hits resulting in a .471 OBP for the month compared to only a .182 average (.289 isolated plate discipline).

Milan Tolentino (SS): 0-2, 1 BB, 2 K - Tolentino, like Brito, has six walks and a pair of hits in March, resulting in a .500 OBP and .200 AVG.

Petey Halpin (LF): 0-2, 1 R, 1 HBP, 1 K - Halpin was one of only two Guardians to cross the plate safely yesterday, but probably wishes he got on base in a less painful manner.

NOTABLE RESERVES

Travis Bazzana (2B): 0-2, 1 K - Bazzana went hitless in his return from the WBC.

Joe Lampe (RF): 1-1 - Lampe is now batting .300 for the Spring after his third base hit of the preseason on the softest contact by any hitter on either team yesterday (28.2 MPH).

Ryan Cesarini (LF): 1-1 - After an 0-for-2 2025 and an 0-for-7 start to this Spring, Cesarini picked up his first Cactus League hit on a leadoff single (99.4 MPH) in the top of the ninth.

Yaikel Mijares (3B): 0-0, 1 BB - Mijares walked later in the ninth to reach safely for the first time in a big league Spring game after going 0-for-2 on March 1 in his debut.

RELIEVER

Peyton Pallette: 1 IP, 1 BB, 1 K - Palette remains unscored upon in four innings this preseason after another impressive frame. His four-seamer, which he threw for half of his 14 pitches and five of his nine strikes (including his only whiff and two of his three called strikes) sat mostly right around 97 MPH. It seems more and more likely every day, especially with Hunter Gaddis likely to start on the IL, that this Rule 5 selection might make the Opening Day 26-Man.

RESERVES

Anthony Martinez (1B): 0-1, 1 K

Jaison Chourio (CF): 0-2, 2 K

Gabriel Rodriguez (SS): 0- 1

Logan Allen slammed in return from WBC as Guardians suffer 8-5 spring training loss to Padres

Updated: Mar. 14, 2026, 7:33 p.m.|Published: Mar. 14, 2026, 7:20 p.m.

By Joe Noga, cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Logan Allen took advantage of an opportunity to represent his family’s heritage when he pitched for Panama in the World Baseball Classic last week. His return to the Guardians spring training rotation was less successful, as the Padres capitalized on a mislocated fastball for a Miguel Andujar grand slam, handing Cleveland an 8-5 spring training loss at Peoria Stadium.

Allen cruised through the first two innings, allowing just two hits. But the third inning proved costly after he walked the first two batters and Xander Bogaerts followed with a single to load the bases.

Jackson Merrill reached on an infield hit when his hard ground ball struck Ramon Laureano as he ran toward third base. The ball was ruled dead, keeping the bases loaded for Andujar, who crushed a fastball over the middle of the plate to left field two pitches later for his third home run of the spring.

The outing marked a setback for Allen, who is competing with fellow left-hander Parker Messick for the fifth spot in Cleveland’s opening day rotation. He allowed six earned runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts across 2 2/3 innings, throwing 68 pitches.

Cleveland opened the scoring in the third when Petey Halpin connected on his second spring home run to center field off Padres starter Nick Pivetta. Halpin is batting .320 with a 1.073 OPS through 12 Cactus League games.

Chase DeLauter sparked a fourth-inning rally with a base hit and later scored on a two-out single by Brayan Rocchio. DeLauter has recorded hits in six of his eight spring appearances and is batting .381 with a 1.054 OPS.

José Ramírez added an RBI single in the fifth inning, extending his team-leading spring RBI total to seven. Gabriel Arias and Austin Hedges also collected hits for the Guardians.

San Diego extended its lead in the fifth when Freddy Fermin hit a two-run home run off Shawn Armstrong, his second of the spring. Cleveland’s bullpen received scoreless relief appearances from Codi Heuer, Tim Herrin, and Pedro Avila.

Rookie first baseman Maick Collado, called up from Cleveland’s depth camp, provided a late spark by fouling off five consecutive pitches in the ninth inning before launching a solo home run to left field.

Outfielder Steven Kwan was scratched from the original lineup after reporting upper respiratory symptoms.

The Guardians face the Athletics at 4:05 p.m. Sunday at Goodyear Ballpark. Right-hander Tanner Bibee (1-2, 2.13) will start for Cleveland against Oakland’s Jack Perkins (2-1, 6.75). The game will stream live on CLEGuardians.com and the Ballpark app.

I have to hope that the non-hitless days by Jones and JRod on Friday don't boost their chances; Nolan doubled and walked; Rodriguez with a couple singles,he has no extra base hits in 30 appearances. I'm pretty sure he's a certainty to depart. Jones could get a reprieve if Valera remains out. Although I'd rather see Petey Halpin get the last OF spot.

Cleveland Guardians Spring Training and World Baseball Classic Prospect Report: 3/14/26

Halpin homers, DeLucia shines on WBC stage, Jace LaViolette makes pro debut

Justin Lada

Mar 15

Scoreboard

San Diego Padres 8, Cleveland Guardians 5 (Statcast)
Italy 8, Puerto Rico 6 (Statcast)

Starters

Chase DeLauter (RF): 1-3, 2 R - The good news is that DeLauter did get the ball in the air again more, not at a productive angle, but not all grounders. We were concerned about his lower half issues not being able to get the ball in the air. He also did a good job running the bases, taking two bases on a wild pitch and then scoring from second on a hit. That’s a good sign about his legs. He probably won’t play Sunday but still good to see him run well.

Petey Halpin (CF): 1-3, HR, K - It was a windy, warm day in Arizona, but it was still good to see Petey Halpin take Padres starter Nick Pivetta deep - 102.4 off the bat and 427 feet. Pretty good day. I think we will see Halpin at some point again in 2026 but he should start in Columbus.

Notable Reserves

Jace LaViolette (LF): 0-1, K - This was the first unofficial pro game with a publicly available box score for Jace LaViolette. He was down 0-2 against a Padres minor league pitcher and did work the count back to 3-2 before whiffing on a 94 MPH fastball in the zone. Not unexpected but hey still good to see him. He’s also a physically interesting prospect. Big and fast. You can see him this Thursday at 4:10 ET on MLB in the Guardians Spring Breakout Game vs the Angels.

Maick Callado (1B): 1-1, HR - The same pitcher Laviolette struck out against, Callado took deep 426 feet and 100 off the bat on a 95 MPH fastball.

Dylan DeLucia (RP, Italy): 4IP, 2H, 3K - DeLucia did a good job for four innings, retiring MLB hitters like Nolan Arenado, Heliot Ramos and Eddie Rosario. His fastball topped out at 93 but grabbed 18 inches of IVB (again, 20 is about the better end of the scale) and it earned him four whiffs and four called strikes. He also landed four sliders for strikes and got two whiffs. His fastball and IVB and slider really give him a chance to exceed as a reliever and this was a fun stage to see DeLucia do it on.

Other Reserves

Jay Driver (RP): 0.2IP

Tyler Thornton (RP): 0.2IP, 2BB, K

Jhorvic Abreus (SS): 0-0

Alfonsin Rosario (RF): 0-1, K

Cooper Ingle (C): 0-1

Wuilfredo Antunez (CF): 0-1

Juan Benjamin (2B): 0-1

David Fry

Guardians use four homers to power past A’s, 12-6

Published: Mar. 15, 2026, 7:46 p.m.

By Paul Hoynes, cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio — On a hot Sunday at Goodyear Ballpark, the Guardians and Athletics combined to hit seven home runs. When the last pitch was made, the Guardians beat the A’s 12-6 behind an offense that collected 15 hits.

David Fry started the power display with a three-run homer in the first for a 4-1 lead. Rhys Hoskins hit a two-run homer in the sixth and CJ Kayfus and Stuart Fairchild opened the seventh with consecutive homers.

Tanner Bibee (1-2, 4.42) was the winner, despite allowing six runs on 12 hits. Three of those hits were homers by Colby Thomas, Cade Marlow and Leo De Vries.

The Guardians are 11-11-1 this spring. The A’s are 11-13.

On a day when the temperature reached 91 degrees, Gabriel Arias, Chase DeLauter, CJ Kayfus and Travis Bazzana each had two hits. Fry led the way with three RBI followed by Jose Ramirez, Chase DeLauter and Hoskins with two each.

DeLauter, who DH’d and hit fourth, has hits in eight of his nine Cactus League games. He’s hitting .400 (10 for 25) with six RBI this spring.

The score was tied, 6-6, before the Guardians pulled away with a four-run sixth. Hoskins’ homer, his second of the spring, was the big hit of the inning.

Shortstop Leo De Vries pulled the A’s into a 6-6 tie with a two-run homer off Bibee with no one out in the sixth. Bibee retired the next two batters before Colin Holderman relieved to end the inning.

Bibee, scheduled for one more spring start before opening the season on March 26 in Seattle, threw 85 pitches, including 63 (74%) strikes. In five starts, he’s struck out 16 in 18 1/3 innings.

He finished with five strikeouts on Sunday.

The Guardians answered the A’s quickly in the sixth.

Steven Kwan tripled and pinch-runner Heribert Silva scored on a single by Gabriel Arias. Jonathan Martinez pinch-ran for Arias, stole second, went to third on a single by Carter Kieboom and scored on DeLauter’s grounder to first.

Holderman, Cade Smith and Erik Sabrowski followed Bibee with 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.

Kayfus’ leadoff homer in the seventh was his second of the spring. Fairchild, who started in center and is trying to make the team as a spring-training invitee, hit his first homer of the spring.

Next

RHP Gavin Williams (1-0, 3.38) will face the Cubs on Monday at 9:05 p.m. ET. The Cubs have not announced a starter. Guardians TV and WTAM 1100 will carry the game.

Jose Ramirez Exits Guardians Spring Training Game With Injury

Tommy Wild

Partner

Jose Ramirez was removed from the Cleveland Guardians Cactus League game on Sunday with what the team is calling "shoulder inflammation."
There are plenty of things that must go the Cleveland Guardians’ way if they plan to win the American League Central for a third straight season and get back to the playoffs in 2026, giving themselves a chance to break their World Series drought.

Out of all of them, Jose Ramirez continuing to play at an MVP level is at the top of the list, meaning he must be healthy and available for the Guardians.

Anytime Ramirez’s name pops up in injury news, there’s going to be worry, just like on Sunday when he exited Cleveland’s Spring Training contest against the Athletics in the fourth inning.

It was initially unclear why Ramírez was subbed out, with it coming before any of Cleveland's other starters. Then, Stephen Vogt confirmed after the game that Ramírez jammed his shoulder sliding into third base, which caused some discomfort.

Cleveland’s skipper called it a “day-to-day” injury for now. Vogt knew that Ramirez had been checked out by the training staff, but didn’t have any information on whether any additional imaging was necessary.

Vogt said he would provide another update on Ramirez's status on Monday, once he had more information about the injury.

Cleveland didn’t need Ramirez’s help to finish off the Athletics in the Cactus League matchup. The Guardians went on to take down their American League counterpart, 12-6, in what was one of the best offensive performances from the team this spring.

Ramirez is unsurprisingly having a fairly strong Cactus League with the Guardians. In 30 at-bats, J-Ram owns an .833 OPS, including two doubles and two home runs. (One of those doubles should almost certainly be a home run, but the Cactus League does not have instant review.)

He’s also stolen three bases in four tries. In many ways, Ramirez already looks like he’s in mid-season form, and his stats reflect it.

Hopefully, this isn’t an injury that keeps Ramirez sidelined for too long. That said, the Guardians are wise to keep him out for the next few days and be cautious with their superstar if it’s something that is truly bothering him.

Opening Day is in 11 days for the Guardians. Fingers crossed that will be enough time for Ramirez to get healthy and be the star player Cleveland needs him to be to begin the season.
