But Rusty, Tampa did not take EE. The deal, as explained above at the time by MLB.com has
Bauers and cash to Indians from Rays,
Yandy and Sulser to Rays from Indians.
EE and draft pick from Indians to Mariners.
Santana and cash from Mariners to Indians.
There is no mention of Rays and Mariners swapping anything at all. As TFIR said, there were rumors at the time that the Rays might trade for EE but they ended up not doing that. TFIR is right about that, I remember that too.
I wonder if there was something more to it at the time that they didn't mention. Like maybe the Rays took EE then shipped him to Seattle after eating a small part of salary, or something weird like that. Because as it is above it makes no sense at all. Why not just two separate trades with two different teams.?
Oh well, neither here nor there. No big deal. Just the conversation TFIR and I started made me remember at the time I was confused about it. But I'm sure there is some odd reason for it not mentioned.

My best guess is that originally Tampa was interested in EE, but backed out over how much Seattle would cover.
(At the time lots of sources said Tampa wanted a big bat. EE was a name mentioned. I believe Avisail Garcia was the fall back option when it fell through - he is similar to EE except younger and cheaper.
Then since the 3 teams had been in contact, they just took that part out. And Seattle kept EE, figuring they'd deal him later.
And who knows there could be some fancy rule around the draft pick to the Mariners that could have made it mandatory they were in the deal with TB and Tribe.

Tampa paid 5 million for EE to go to Seattle. Seattle paid 6 million to get Cleveland to take Santana. So Tampa paid a large part for EE to go to Seattle to get Yandy. They bought Yandy.

Money also moving in big trade: $5M from #Rays to Mariners then $6M from Mariners to #Indians. So even more $ saved by Clev

Lindor just homered again for the Clip Show. A rope that cleared wall and this concrete overlook that is in opposing park in right-center. Hell of a shot. He had a double his first time up too. Bring him up already.

Actually it probably screwed us. No way they will let him play both ends of double header just returning from rehab stint, you would assume. Where as maybe he would have played both games if one were tonight. Maybe they’ll let him DH the second game.
