Matt Moore came within one out of a no-hitter in Thursday's 4-0 win over the Dodgers.

Moore struck out seven and walked three on the evening. Manager Bruce Bochy was noticeably agitated in the dugout as the 27-year-old southpaw's pitch count began to balloon in a 24-pitch eighth inning. Moore had thrown 120 total pitches by the end of that frame, but despite the high count, Bochy decided to trot him out for the ninth. He retired Kike Hernandez on a sinking liner to start the frame -- Denard Span made a spectacular sliding catch on that one -- then induced a ground out from Howie Kendrick. Corey Seager would break up the near no-no via a flare single to right with two outs in the frame. Ouch. He finished the game having thrown 133 pitches (88 strikes). Since coming over to the Giants at the trade deadline, Moore has pitched to a 3.41 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 29/20 K/BB ratio over 31 2/3 innings (five starts). He will look to build off of Thursday's stellar outing in a home start against the Diamondbacks next time he toes the rubber.

Guirriel with a couple of defensive gems tonight and a pair of hits in 4 tries. One was a homer. He made the last out of the game against Chapman in a reunion of sorts. Guirriel swung at Chapman's first offering and nearly deposited the ball in the right field seats. Just a loud out.

At the time, I thought Sale would be a better pick than Pomeranz. The Indians took Pomeranz with their 5th pick and Sales went to Chicago in the 13th. WoW !

CHICAGO --

Rick Renteria was named the 40th manager in White Sox history on Monday and was formally introduced during a news conference at U.S. Cellular Field. He succeeds Robin Ventura, whose five-year managerial tenure came to an end on Sunday. "We feel in Rick we are now in the position to commit fully to him as our manager," senior vice president and general manager Rick Hahn said. "He is obviously very well respected throughout this game, has an incredibly high baseball IQ and a tireless work ethic and is already well-respected throughout the clubhouse."

You got that right! Next year will be different story. Ventura should be fired. There is no way the sox were as bad as they looked this year.
