I agree with the above posts but wish to make a seperate point. Getting the players in a trade is one thing. But being willing to USE them and learn on the fly is another. In the past we had way too many rag arm and veteran scrubs who we chose over youngsters. Frequently someone would be brought up to watch from the bench and have a few cups of Java.

Keeping Marte and some other busts way too long also hurt us IMHO.

LaPorta actually had very few minor league games under his belt when he traded for him, and I guess his injuries of last year were real. I like the way he's being used and the way he's producing this season. Very patient hitter, lots of walks, good share of XB hits and hits when we need them.

Brantley has developed his power "late" but still much earlier than I had expected. He's been a great surprise to me this year. He just turned 24 so he appears to be a budding star.

I especially like our history of trading 1st basemen to Seattle. One soon-to-retire part time 1B plus one never to return to the majors part-time 1B for high quality RF and SS.

And then add acquisition of a speedy excellent CF who can bunt and perhaps hit to major league standards for great AAAA power hitting 1B.

My regret is that we couldn't interest the Mariners in Ryan Garko. We should have been able to pry a Michael Pineda (currently 6-2, 2.64 out of them).

Good points Civ. I was sure wrong on Garko. I thought he would be a really good hitter.

Nobody was more sold on Garko than me. I was convinced he would be a stud. Oh well...

That storm that hit Joplin was really something .

198 MPH winds that peeled bark off trees.

Reds sent Volquez to the minors today.

He didn't help his cause with his criticism of the Reds offense yesterday .

Our game is scheduled to be on ESPN2 this evening. Not sure how the rain delay will affect.

Oh, and there it is. Live from Progressive Field.
