JUNIOR (2015): Hit .311 in 29 games (28 starts) … missed 30 games from March 8 to April 26 due to a strained oblique … hit .397 (23-for-58) over the last 15 games of the season … had four-hit games against San Jose State on May 9 and No. 12 Arizona State on May 12 … had hits in nine of the first 10 games of the season before his injury … scored 25 runs and drove in 13 … one of four co-captains on the team.

SOPHOMORE (2014): Earned All-Mountain West first team honors at shortstop and was one of 16 players named to the Brooks Wallace Award Midseason Watch List, which goes to the best shortstop in the nation … named a Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-American … one of just two Lobos to start all 58 games, with 41 coming at second and 17 coming at shortstop … hit .340 (83-for-244) with nine doubles, two triples and two home runs … scored 57 runs and drove in 38 while batting first or second the entire season … led the team with 14 stolen bases and 35 walks … earned MW Player of the Week honors for games played April 7-13 … hit .500 (11-for-22) that week with eight runs, seven RBIs, a double, a triple, a home run and two stolen bases … had a 13-game hitting streak, which was the longest on the team in 2014, from Feb. 28 to March 28 in which he hit .328 (19-for-58) with 15 runs and 12 RBIs … including that streak he had hits in 18 of 19 games and hit .363 (29-for-80) … had a career-high five RBIs as part of a 3-for-6 performance at Stephen F. Austin on April 8 … had season-high four hits vs. San Diego State on May 3 … had a nine—game hitting streak from April 8 to April 21 and hit .425 (17-for-40) with 13 runs and nine RBIs … reached base safely in each of the last 28 games of the season, the longest such streak on the team … set a Mountain West record for assists in conference play with 106 … his 199 total assists were the fourth most in a single season in program history … finished the year with 107 straight starts, the eighth longest streak in UNM history … did not go consecutive games without a hit all season.

FRESHMAN (2013):Named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American, named Co-Freshman of the Year in the Mountain West and earned All-MW second team honors ... hit .280 and led the team with 47 walks to boast a .412 OBP ... scored 58 runs, had nine doubles, and tied for the team lead with five triples ... finished the season strong as he reached base in each of the final 26 games ... earned MW Player of the Week honors April 29 after going 6-11 (.545) in a three-game sweep of UNLV at Lobo Field, which included him hitting the game-winning sacrifice fly in the 10th inning of a come-from-behind 14-13 win ... scored a season-high four runs at San Diego St. on May 18 ... hit his only home run of the season against Nevada in the Mountain West Tournament ... set a new UNM record by recording 16 sacrifice bunts ... tied a MW record with 26 walks in conference games, and set a new freshman standard in the conference with 100 defensive assists in league games ... named both Academic All-Mountain West and a Mountain West Scholar-Athlete.

A couple of firsts for Giovanny Urshela

After his first career hit in the 3rd inning today, the Indians 3B crushed his first career MLB home run in the bottom of the 5th vs. the Mariners, and the ball was promptly returned to him. Cleveland leads 6-0

Well, the race for 5th starter can be declared over. He's really been quite solid.

Now to patch the lineup holes.

Aviles with 2 walks today, and Urshela with 2 hits, including a homer.

Civ- I watched him play 2 games on TV, the thing that impressed me the most about his defense was his throwing straight on line and fast to 1B, a welcome change. I was happy to see the two hits not only for him and the team, but for you who have followed him for so long and championed his call up.
