EASTLAKE, Ohio – In the first of a scheduled six-game series, the Lake County Captains (12-13, 43-47) defeated the Beloit Sky Carp (13-12, 40-50) by a final score of 2-1 on Tuesday night at Classic Auto Group Park in Eastlake.

This marks Lake County’s second consecutive victory, and fourth in their last five games.

On his 23rd birthday, Aaron Davenport (3-7) turned in arguably his best start of the season. The right-hander tied his career high of 7 innings pitched, allowing just 3 hits and one earned run, while throwing 5 strikeouts in 82 pitches (57 strikes). This was Davenport’s third win in his last four appearances, and just his second outing this season in which he did not surrender any walks.

The 23-year-old permitted just 2 baserunners in his first 5 innings of work, which were courtesy of a pair of Beloit singles in the 3rd and 4th innings, respectively. Then, the Sky Carp’s Osiris Johnson began the 6th inning with a 468-foot solo home run, his 5th home run of the season, cutting Lake County’s lead to 2-1.

Ultimately, Davenport retired 11 of the final 12 Beloit hitters he faced, with Johnson’s solo home run being the only blemish in this span.

Eventually, Lenny Torres Jr. pitched a perfect 8th inning, throwing one strikeout. Magnus Ellerts then entered the game to begin the 9th inning. After striking out the first hitter he faced, the Sky Carp’s Yiddi Cappe hit a single, putting the go-ahead run at the plate. However, Ellerts retired the final two Beloit hitters in order, earning his 3rd

This defeat snaps a two-game winning streak for the Captains.

As a team, the Sky Carp recorded a combined 12 hits within the game’s first 5 innings, resulting in 6 runs. Captains starting pitcher Steve Hajjar was unable to make it out of the top of the 1st inning, allowing a single and 3 walks, the last of which brought home the game’s first run. The left-hander tied his career-low of 0.2 innings pitched, throwing 36 total pitches (17 strikes).

Juan Zapata then entered the game in long relief. The right-hander pitched 4.1 innings, allowing a career-high 11 hits, 5 earned runs, his most in High-A, and zero walks, while throwing 2 strikeouts.

In the top of the 3rd inning, Beloit hit three consecutive singles, with the third being an RBI single, which gave the Sky Carp a 2-0 lead. One inning later, Beloit recorded four more hits, all singles, including three in a row to end the inning. The final two were RBI singles, which put the Sky Carp ahead 4-0.

Then, in the top of the 5th inning, Beloit had another three hits, which included a double from Cameron Barstad and a two-run home run from Ynmanol Marinez, his 2nd home run of the season, which made the score 6-0 in favor of Beloit.

After Elvis Jerez pitched a perfect 6th inning of relief, the right-hander allowed a single and two hit-by-pitches to begin the 7th frame. He then threw his second strikeout of the game, which was immediately followed by a two-run double from the Sky Carp’s Tanner Allen, the Sky Carp’s final hit of the day. This hit led to Shawn Rapp entering the game, as he struck out the final two Beloit hitters of the half-inning.

Offensively, the Captains did not record their first baserunner of the game until the bottom of the 4th inning, when Milan Tolentino, Cleveland’s No. 19 prospect according to MLB.com, hit a solo home run. This was his 4th home run of the season, which extended his hitting streak to 6 games and trimmed Lake County’s deficit to 4-1. Dayan Frias, the reigning Midwest League Player of the Week and Cleveland’s No. 28 prospect according to MLB.com, immediately followed with a single, extending his hitting streak to 9 games.

The Captains then added three more runs in the bottom of the 6th inning. An RBI single from Joe Lampe, Cleveland’s No. 26 prospect according to MLB.com, gave Lake County their second run of the contest. Eventually, consecutive bases-loaded walks drawn by Will Bartlett and Junior Sanquintin made the score 6-4.

Jake Fox, Cleveland’s No. 8 prospect according to MLB.com, concluded the game’s scoring with a leadoff solo home run in the bottom of the 7th inning. This was the 20-year-old’s 5th home run of the season, which extended his hitting streak to 6 games.

First pitch for Game 3 of this week’s scheduled six-game series between the Captains and Sky Carp is scheduled for tomorrow night at 7:00 PM. It will be “Bring Your Human Thursday” at the ballpark. Coverage of the game can be found on both the Bally Live app and MiLB.tv, as well as through @LCCaptains on both Twitter and Instagram.

The only reason I looked at the Captains was for an update on Chase DeLauter. He is NOT on the IL. Just isn't playing.

Justin Boyd a 22 year old OF acquired for Benson is out of the season. He was terrible when he played: 140/290/200 in 50 at bats. He followed Steven Kwan at Oregon State and has a similar talent profile although he was drafted 4 rounds earlier than Kwan. Maybe we'll see something from hm in '24

#Guardians 21yr old OF prospect Chase DeLauter may return to the (High-A) Lake County Captains lineup this weekend and maybe as soon as Friday. DeLauter last played on 7/18/23 when he had to leave the game after rolling his ankle.

Hottest pitching prospect in each system

AMERICAN LEAGUE CENTRAL

Guardians: Will Dion, LHP (No. 30)

July 26th, 2023

Dion stands out most with his strike-throwing and his solid changeup, and he's on a roll with a 1.96 ERA, .224 opponent average and 20/7 K/BB ratio in his last four starts (23 innings) in Double-A. The 2021 ninth-rounder from McNeese State leads the system with a 2.63 ERA between High-A and Double-A.

Dayan Frias,

Furman Ends Career-High Four-Hit Night with Walk-Off Single, Captains Win 5-4 in 10 Innings

July 29, 2023 - Midwest League (MWL) - Lake County Captains News Release

EASTLAKE, Ohio -

In the fourth of a scheduled six-game series, the Lake County Captains (14-14, 45-48) defeated the Beloit Sky Carp (14-14, 41-52) by a final score of 5-4 in 10 innings on Friday night at Classic Auto Group Park in Eastlake.

This marks Lake County's seventh walk-off win of the season.

With two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, Nate Furman hit a walk-off single to win the game. The 22-year-old had a Minor League career-high four hits in the game, finishing 4-for-5 at the plate with a double and an RBI.

The Captains scored their first two runs of the game in the bottom of the 3rd inning. After missing the previous eight games, Chase DeLauter, Cleveland's No. 5 prospect according to MLB.com, hit a two-run double to give Lake County a 2-1 lead. This extended his hitting streak to 11 games, which is the longest active streak in the Midwest League.

Milan Tolentino, Cleveland's No. 18 prospect according to MLB.com, then hit a game-tying sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 7th inning, making the score 3-3. He extended his hitting streak to 8 games with a single and double earlier in the contest.

One inning later, Dayan Frias, the reigning Midwest League Player of the Week and Cleveland's No. 27 prospect according to MLB.com, led off the home half of the 8th inning with a go-ahead solo home run, putting the Captains in front 4-3. This was his 9th home run of the season, which increased his team lead, and 42nd RBI of the season, which gave him sole possession of the Lake County lead.

[ That's good news. Frias was terrific this winter playing for Columbia. He led his team to a first place finish. He made the Caribbean Series All Star Team, Frias was also one of the team leaders in the Classic this spring. I was a little concerned with his slow start in Lake County. I hope he's finally figuring things out. I was never concerned with his defensive skills. He's pretty good. ]

[ Frias's Unassisted triple play in the Caribbean Series this past winter was a 1st. Never been done before. ]

[ At the age of 20, Dayan Frías became the first fielder to make a triple play in this Greater Caracas 2023 Caribbean Series . It happened in the upper part of the fifth inning in the game between Vaqueros de Montería, from Colombia, and Leones del Caracas, from Venezuela.

The young Colombian starred in a tremendous play in the last game of the first round of this Caribbean Series, meaning an incredible triple play that ended up being of great importance for the Vaqueros, who were trailing 5-1.

The moment Carlos Rivero hit a short liner that bounces near second base, the Cleveland Guardians prospect catches the ball quickly stepped on second for the force out, tagged the runner on second out, and threw to first to complete the triple play.

Jake Fox, Cleveland's No. 7 prospect according to MLB.com, also extended his hitting streak to 8 games with a pair of singles in the bottom of the 5th and 9th innings, respectively.

In relief, Magnus Ellerts (1-1) earned his first career Minor League victory by pitching a perfect 10th inning, throwing 2 strikeouts in the frame. Shawn Rapp suffered his first career High-A blown save in the top of the 9th inning after allowing a game-tying solo home run to Beloit's Davis Bradshaw, which was his second home run of the night. However, Rapp threw 2 strikeouts to keep the game tied at 4-4.

Josh Wolf made his first relief appearance of the series to begin the 6th inning. The right-hander pitched 3 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits and 3 walks, while throwing 3 strikeouts. This outing extended Wolf's scoreless innings streak to 7.2 innings.

In his fourth High-A start of the season, Captains starting pitcher Parker Messick, Cleveland's No. 15 prospect according to MLB.com, did not record a decision. The left-hander pitched 5 innings, allowing 4 hits, 3 earned runs, and 3 walks, while throwing 4 strikeouts in 92 pitches (52 strikes). Messick gave up two solo home runs in the top of the 5th inning, his first home runs allowed since July 9th.

First pitch for Game 5 of this week's scheduled six-game series between the Captains and Sky Carp is scheduled for tomorrow night at 7:00 PM. It will be "Sausage Fest Saturday" and "Italian Heritage Night" at the ballpark, where the first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a José Ramírez bobblehead presented by The Strong Museum of Play. Coverage of the game can be found on both the Bally Live app and MiLB.tv, as well as through @LCCaptains on both Twitter and Instagram.

Aaron Bracho outdid Frias with a 5 hit game for Akron. Bracho was a big deal bat and top notch prospect in his first year playing stateside. He slipped badly the next few years; he fell out of the top 30. He's not been great but his hitting is at least on par with fellow IF prospects Jose Tena and Angel Martinez in Akron. However, he is not a SS defender so his prospect status remains behind theirs.

243/338/425 10 doubles 2 triples 9 homers 34BB 66K only 2 steals

I remain uncertain why Johnathan Rodriguez is not a prospect. Promoted to Columbus last week, he has started out his AAA career with 5 hits in 16 at bats, 2 of them homers, and a double. Like Gonzalez he doesn't walk a lot, but a little more, 34 this year. His HR total is up to 20. 3rd round draft choice in 2017; he's 23 now.

Will Dion named as our hottest pitcher [although not a prospect since he's a fairly soft tosser] hit a bump in the road yesterday

3 1/3 4 4 4 4 3

Jose Tena completed a solid July with a hitting line of 348/433/494
Angel Martinez hit 5 homers in July and his line was 298/390/524

In Lake County another Infielder heated up after a cool start
Milan Tolentino equal his extra base total of the first 3 months and his July line was 376/398/570
And 2b/cf Jake Fox had a 4 hit day to conclude the months 320/389/443

And between Akron and Columbus J. Rodriguez was 326/368/673
