some sort of statistical analysis tool at BA projects Gavin Williams as the no. 3 prospect in the IL, well ahead of Bibee and just below Andrew Abbott who is doing wonderful things for the Reds inhis first starts

I would take a minor league flyer on local boy (High Point NC) Will Myers who got released by the Reds.

Guardians signed RHP Jerad Eickhoff to a minor league contract.
Eickhoff hasn't appeared in the majors since getting pulverized for 10 runs over 4 1/3 innings last June in a spot start for the Pirates. The 32-year-old journeyman right-hander is merely emergency pitching depth at this stage of his career.

With the Clippers running low on starters, since they all keep creeping up to Cleveland, they needed to sign a second minor league veteran, too, A 28 year old right hander with career minorleague ERA of 4.72 and never for obvious reasons in the majors.
Debut Friday night for Columbus: 3 innings 8 hits 7 walks 9 runs but only 8 earned 2 strikeouts.
Glad to have him on board.
Eickhoff's debut was much better: he lasted 2 more innings; allowed 2 fewer hits, walked 2 fewer and allowed but 5 runs. ERA 9. WHIP 2.

Frias broke an 0-fer 3 games hitting streak with a base hit and a double today.
The Captains lost their third game in a row, 3-2, on June 25 at Dayton.
DH Dayan Frias hit a two-run single in the second inning to account for Lake County’s scoring. Frias doubled with two outs in the ninth, but was stranded. He finished 2-for-4, and has eight doubles and 17 RBI this season.
The Captains were limited to five hits and struck out 10 times. They were 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

Clippers working through pitching turnover; Cantillo excels in start | Guardians minors roundup for June 25
By JUSTIN LADA |
June 25, 2023 at 9:22 p.m.
Triple-A: Columbus Clippers (3-4) at Indianapolis Indians (Pirates)
Injuries and callups continue to ravage the Clippers. The Guardians signed veteran RHP Jared Eickhoff and RHP Riley Smith out of independent leagues over the past week to fill out the roster while Zach Plesac remains on the developmental list and Gavin Williams remains in the Cleveland rotation for at least one more turn.
Columbus did get some good news on the pitching front on June 23 as Joey Cantillo turned in what was probably his best start in Triple-A since being promoted. Cantillo fanned eight and walked three in 5 2/3 innings, and then just three hits. He averaged almost 95 with his fastball and induced 12 swings and misses as the Clippers still fell, 3-1, though Cantillo received a no-decision.
Cleveland is still figuring out the best role for Cody Morris after he came back and was optioned down to get more available arms in the Guardians’ bullpen. But he threw two perfect innings out of the bullpen on June 21 with two strikeouts. He has 13 strikeouts in 12 1/3 innings between is MLB stint and minor league stint so far this year. He came on in relief during the doubleheader on June 21 and picked up a win in the 3-2 victory over Indianapolis. He tossed another inning, allowing a hit and a run on June 25 in the Clippers 7-6 win. With three innings in his last two outings, it appears the Guardians are leaning toward keeping him as a reliever with Cal Quantrill returning and Williams having been called up.
James Karinchak remains in Triple-A and allowed two runs in three innings with seven strikeouts on the week.
Offensively speaking, Jhonkensy Noel did most of the heavy lifting over the last week, though he had his own struggles this year, had six RBI and two homers and with a double as week, Bryan Rochio turned in another consistent week, with a homer, double, two RBI and three steals.
Cleveland could really use a right-handed hitting outfield type who can hit lefties, and Oscar Gonzalez hasn’t been exactly been thriving in Triple-A. But does have good splits vs. left handers. He was having a slow week, driving two runs through June 24, and struck out six times and walking one, something Cleveland was hoping he could reel in during his time in the minors. On June 25, Gonzalez hit for the cycle, going 5-5 with two singles, a double, triple and homer in the Clippers 7-6 win. Perhaps some returning confidence and other factors could see him get another shot in Cleveland soon.
George Valera returned to the Clippers last week but was 1-for-23 with 10 strikeouts and five walks as he works back from a hamstring injury he suffered just after returning from a season-long wrist injury as well. It might be some time before he is deemed close to being ready to join the Guardians for some help this summer.
The Clippers have June 26 and 27 off, but host Toledo (Detroit) in a series at home June 28-July 3.

Double-A: Akron RubberDucks (3-4) vs. Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Mets)
Akron has been hit with injuries as well with Jack Leftwich joining the injured list as the system has seen its share of injuries lately. But pitching wasn’t necessarily a huge issue against Binghamton this past week. Hunter Stanley allowed three runs in four innings with two walks and five strikeouts in a 4-3 loss on June 23 as part of a doubleheader.
The ‘Ducks needed 11 innings to beat the Rumble Ponies, 4-3, on June 24 but Will Dion pitched well enough to earn the win earlier in the game by holding Binghamton to two runs in six innings on six hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. It was Dion’s first start in Double-A without allowing a walk and his third straight start where he’s allowed two runs or less.
Petey Halpin provided a homer in that 4-3, 11-inning win on June 24, and Juan Brito, who was having a slow week for the first time in Double-A, had two hits, along with Angel Martinez, who has struggled the majority of the season so far.
Jonathan Rodriguez hit a pair of homers and he continues to try to look to make a way for himself to get noticed again as a prospect and posted an OPS over .800. He did strikeout 12 times on the week, compared to just two walks, which is why his performance and future remain murky at best.
Bryan Lavastida has started to see things turn around for him finally after a year and a half of slipping away from what put him on the Guardians’ radar going into 2022. He hit a homer and drove in three runs, walked four times compared to two strikeouts on the week. He also drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the second game of the double-header, a 4-2 win on June 23. He’s now hitting .259/.387/.370 on the season.
Jose Tena continues to slide in the wrong direction with 10 strikeouts, three walks and just three hits in 26 at bats during the week. He did have a hit and an two RBI with a walk in Akron’s 5-3 win one June 25.
Cal Quantrill made a rehab start in the June 25 win, throwing five scoreless innings, surrendering three hits and a walk with three strikeotus. He said after the game he feels ready for his next start to be up in Cleveland.
Akron heads out to Erie (Tigers) for a give game series at the first half comes to a close, starting June 28.

High-A Lake County Captains (2-4) at Dayton Dragons (Cincinnati Reds)
The Captains started off strong start thanks to a two-RBI game from both Joe Lampe and WIll Bartlett in a 6-5 win, overcoming a seven-walk start from Aaron Davenport on June 20. Bartlett continued his strong week with a homer, double and four RBI the Captains 8-3 win on June 22. He had six RBI on the week and hit .250/.333/.583. Davenport did recover on June 25, going six innings and holding Dayton to three runs on three hits, just one walk and struck out five.
Despite not registering a pitch above 88 mph, Rodney Boone held the Dragons to no runs and five hits through 4 2/3 innings in that June 22 win and struck out nine.
The Captains had a hard time getting offense outside of those two games. Jake Fox, who also hit a mammoth homer in the June 22 win, doubled to lead off the game on June 23 and scored the first and only run for Lake County that night in an eventual 3-1 loss. Big lefty Steven Hajjar, who came to the Guardians organization in the Will Benson trade at the end of the offseason, threw five no-hit innings in the loss. He struck out four through the first two innings, but his control waned after that, walking four, but not allowing a hit. Hajjar was siting 92-93 with his fastball and hit 95 to go along with a big slider from the left side and an awkward arm angle for hitters to pick up, especially left handers.
Trenton Denholm held the Dragons hitless in the sixth as well but they eventually broke through in the seventh for the Captains to fall.
Juan Zaptata was also a hard luck loser on June 21, firing 6 2/3 shutout innings, allowing just a hit and two walks in a 1-0 loss.
Dayan Frias, who had been one of the offensive bright spots in May, has slowed down some, but he did double and drove in a run in the Captains 3-2 loss on June 25.
The Captains come back home to start the second half on June 28, hosting Fort Wayne (Padres). There’s a chance they could have 2022 first round pick, OF Chase DeLauter, sometime in the second half as well as he rehabs from a foot injury going back to his college season. The Captains did pick up 2022 draft pick, reliever Magnus Ellerts, who was named a Carolina League All-Star at Lynchburg just after his promotion.
