Some with the club believe SD general manager A.J. Preller will treat closer Kirby Yates as this year’s Brad Hand, trying to maximize his value by trading him at the deadline. Yates, 23-for-23 in save chances with a 0.96 ERA, is eligible for free agency after next season.
Preller, though, would risk upsetting the clubhouse dynamic if he moved Yates, and he would need to get a better return than he did for Hand.
In that deal, the Padres sent Hand and fellow reliever Adam Cimber to the Indians for catching prospect Francisco Mejía, who has batted only .176 with a .548 OPS in the majors in 116 plate appearances at the major-league level with San Diego.

Clevinger looked so good in his rehab start in Akron last night (5+ shutout innings) that the club removed him from the I.L. this morning. He will make his next start on Monday for the Tribe.

It was a rapid fall for the Angels' Opening Day closer. The club brought him in on a one-year, $8.5 million contract and they will end up eating most of it.
He gets the boot after registering a 6.26 ERA in 25 games. He struck out 29 batters in 23 innings but walked 20 and served up a whopping nine home runs. As bad as he was he never actually blew a save. He was 0-2 with four saves in four chances.

Good example of that right there.
It's always easy to remember the bad decisions, but the one to let Cody and Andrew Miller walk is looking incredibly good.
Best bullpen in the AL, and both those guys sucking. And they would have been (relatively) expensively sucking.

Miller's doing ok after a rotten start but he's not closing; for what he's providing the Cards he's way overpaid.

Jake Bauers is turning the page after seeing an awful month of May carry into the early part of June.
Bauers is batting 11-for-22 on the Cleveland Indians' current road trip heading into the Wednesday contest against the Texas Rangers in Arlington, Texas.
So what has changed for Bauers, who began the trek by becoming the first Cleveland player to hit for the cycle since 2016 in a 13-4 romp over the Detroit Tigers on Friday?
"It's really kind of settling in and remembering who I am," the 23-year-old California native said of his recent success at the plate. "I'm not a guy who is going to launch 40 homers. I'm going to hit the ball hard, and whatever happens, happens."

I read an interview with Tribe minor leaguer, Eli Morgan, earlier this season. And Morgan said something I didn’t know. The Indians have a strength and condition program in the offseason for pitchers who want to attend. And he said every pitcher that attends sees a tick up in their velocity.
(During spring training I heard Clevinger say he had worked this offseason and had better velocity, so same program I would assume)
When Plesac was first drafted I never thought we would be seeing him regularly throwing 96 MPH BB’s. But there he was doing it last night.
(1 ER on 2 hits in 7 IP against a pretty darn good Texas lineup)
I give Tribe brass some crap, but man I have to hand it to them on their development of young pitchers. They just keep turning them out.

HB - Bauer just made another appearance on MLBNow and talked about which teams were ahead in using technology to develop pitchers.
He named Houston, Dodgers and Indians as teams at the forefront.
With what we have seen I'd have to believe him. That's one area they seem to get the most out of.
Just for starters to see Clevinger and Bieber develop like they have and now Plesac.
So perhaps that's why they are looking to deal starting pitching (Bauer especially, along with his arbitration/salary policy). They know they can develop more.
