Carrasco injured and taken to hospital

Triple-A Columbus right-handed pitcher Carlos Carrasco was struck on his right elbow by a line drive off the bat of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre second baseman Corban Joseph and was removed from the game in the fifth inning of action on Thursday night.

Media personnel at the game said that Carrasco was in considerable pain and that the incident was very scary. He has been taken to an area hospital for further evaluation, likely to get x-rays on his arm/elbow.

Prior to the injury, Carrasco had thrown 4.2 shutout innings and allowed five hits and one walk while striking out four batters. He threw 65 pitches, 43 of them for strikes, and ran his shutout streak to 14.2 innings at Columbus this season.

The Indians may have lost another pitcher in the game as left-hander Giovanni Soto reliever Carrasco, but just two-thirds of an inning and 14 pitches later, he had to be removed from the game. Apparently, manager Chris Tremie saw something he did not like and he and the training staff visited the mound and after a discussion Soto was removed from the game. It is not yet known if he suffered an injury, and if so, what exactly happened.

I wondered why Carrasco left early after such an effective game. He was ready to fill in a spot in the depleted big league rotation. He has the talent to be our No. 1 starter, or No. 2 behind Bauer. This could be very bad news.

Carrasco sidelined with elbow contusion, House promoted

Carlos Carrasco

The Cleveland Indians announced Friday morning that Triple-A Columbus right-handed pitcher Carlos Carrasco suffered a deep contusion to his right elbow and forearm after being hit with a line drive on Thursday night. He is listed as day to day.

Carrasco was in the midst of another very good outing for Columbus as he had thrown 4.2 shutout innings before the incident occurred, and in total has thrown 14.2 shutout innings in three appearances. While he is listed as day to day, he will probably miss some time in order to let the swelling go down and to ensure there is nothing else wrong. If he is out a few weeks and not throwing, it will probably also mean that he will need to do some sort of throwing program to get back into game shape. In any case, the Indians dodged a major bullet with this incident as the scene described by those in attendance was pretty scary.

With Columbus in need of a starter, the Indians gave a well deserved promotion to Double-A Akron left-hander T.J. House and sent him to Columbus. In four starts with Akron, he went 2-1 with a 3.22 ERA, and in 22.1 innings allowed 20 hits, 1 home run, 3 walks, and had 27 strikeouts.

House deserves the promotion based on his 2012 and 2013 work in Akron. According to the "experts" he's not generally that highly regarded, but he is by the Indians who put him on the 40-man roster exposing TJ McFarland and Hector Rondon, both of whom chosen, retained and were doing well the last I looked for the O's and the Cubs respectively.

Tribe with 3 hits, Royals with only one more, but hold 3-0 lead in the 5th. Let's hope that when Bourn returns he ignites the offense. It's pretty lackluster now.

Indians lead 6-2 in the bottom of the 6th. Aviles with a 3 run homer and Kluber is pitching well.
