When Masterson ended the inning at 99 pitches....on Opening Day, I think Acta finalized his decision. If his pitch count had been in the low 90's I think Acta would have let him go for the complete game.

6800The guy who took away Hannahan's double earlier over ran a single and let the ball get by
Re: GameTime!™
6803I guess Kipnis would be the 4th batter, and Hannahan the 5th.
Let's have Kotchman end it....
Nope, up to Kipnis

6808Kotchman couldn't hit a fly ball, and Kipnis grounded out weakly.
It's a bitch to strand the winning runner at 3rd when he got there with one out.
It's a bitch to have the lead off runner at 2nd not score.

6809Pestano shook off two pitches Santana called on that first batter. One down.
K for Pestano and two down

I can see not going for the complete game on Opening Day--my guess is that rarely happens anymore. But the point about Perez is a solid one, leaving aside that he shouldn't have been guaranteed the closer role anyway coming off a mediocre 2011.
This team can't afford to throw away starts like Masterson had today. And if memory serves, didn't we have even more trouble scoring in extra innings a year ago than in most situations?
